Chapter 2

Sophie's Pov I took a quick peek around the estate as soon as we arrived. The stunning beige marble stairway that faced me had two smaller, segregated staircases leading up to the top on either side. A lovely, elegant appearance was created by the black railing, a dazzling crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling in the center of the staircase, and tiny spotlights lighting the remaining portion of the ceiling. As we walked by the stairway leading to the backyard, I felt a tremendous sense of nostalgia sweep through me. This house held so many memories, and even though the majority of the interior had been altered, it still seemed familiar. Even though I didn't live in this home for very long, Clara was by my side during those years, which made them some of the best of my life. We were still out of sight of people when we stood at the backyard's entrance, but I could still hear music and conversation. We proceeded to the right side of the house by following the stone pathway that curved around the corner. I looked around carefully; on either side of the path were lovely flowers and plants in every shade of color. It felt like I was strolling through a meadow full with vibrant hues, so I had to say that the gardener did an amazing job. Just before we turned the corner to join the others, I stopped walking. "Just inhale deeply, Sophie." I assure you that you will be alright." I looked up at Ethan, and he smiled comfortingly and squeezed my hand a little. Grateful he was here to calm my anxiety a little, I tightened my grip on his hand. "Yes, it's just my nerves getting the better of me. I have so many recollections from my long stay here, even though it has been a while." I smiled a little back at him. My nerves were starting to become a little tense, so I was glad when he drew me in a little closer. I gave a little gasp as I saw what was ahead of me as we turned the bend. I was in awe of how exquisite everything appeared. "Wow." I let out a breath as I took in what I was seeing. It was a large, open area surrounded by enormous trees. They have succeeded in lighting the entire area, encircling the trees with light chains, and suspending string lights from tree to tree to create the illusion of an above canopy of light. Large circular tables were strewn about, adorned with elaborate tablecloths, and gold-engraved vases held delicate pink and white Camellia flowers. I can't even begin to think how extravagant the wedding would be if this was only the engagement party. And judging by how many people are in attendance, it would undoubtedly be fantastic. "Yeah, I agree." Ethan said, surveying the backyard as well. "I'm going to place this on the gift table right now. Could I please fetch you a drink?" He gestured toward the far-right side, where a bartender was stationed. "Thanks, anything non-alcoholic would be very appreciated. I'd like to abstain as much as I can." It wasn't that I couldn't enjoy a couple glasses of champagne; if something went wrong, I just didn't want anything to cloud my judgment. I am quite anxious and would never risk doing something reckless. Yes! I'll be back immediately." As he made his way to the present table, he said. I was alone now, s**t. Instead of going with him, I found myself standing here by myself and unsure of what to do.Shall I just approach and greet them with a simple "hi, remember me?" Yes, that plan sounded terrible. I chose to scan my surroundings to see if I could make out Clara among the throng of people. I was living in my own unhappy bubble, not realizing that half the people were already staring at me. I started to feel uneasy with everyone's attention on me, so I slightly adjusted my foot position. I felt so underdressed all of a sudden—what in the world was this? It seemed as though every model from an Italian Vogue magazine had been thrown out into this backyard. Never before have I seen so many stunning people in one location. The guys were dressed in suits that made them appear like outsiders, while the women were dressed in long, exquisite gowns that were quite threatening. The more I observed those who did not fit into this world, the more frightening that seemed. I was getting more and more intimidated by them. It was clear that I didn't belong here and was something of an outsider. I stood up and changed once more, unsure of where to go. How much time did it take to get a drink, too? I looked at the folks around me and gave a few awkward smiles, saying I wouldn't mind being saved right now. And Clara, where on earth was she? There were too many people around, so I kept scanning the area to see if I could find her anyplace. I was looking around when I noticed someone, and I focused on him. I looked him over, gasping at the sight of him. This guy is amazing. In fact, breathtaking. His black dress slacks and black dress shirt were partially unbuttoned, revealing a portion of his chest. His flawless arm was displayed when his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. This dude was perfectly styled and at the top of his game. This man embodied all that was ideal. My gaze flickered up to his face, slowly scanning him from bottom to top. We looked at each other, and I was a little surprised, holding my breath again. I would normally look away right away, but there was something about him that kept me staring at him for a little while longer. Even from a distance, I could feel the strength coming off him as he stood upright and smoked. He looked me over from head to toe, too, and c****d his head slightly to the side. His visage was completely expressionless as he fixed me with his stare. We were staring at each other from a distance, and I couldn't seem to take my eyes off of him. It felt like I was in some kind of trance. "Don't look at him like that." I was startled when Ethan abruptly moved to stand in front of me, obstructing my view of the man. "He has killed people for staring at him in a wrong way." As he gave me my drink, he informed me. "Huh?" I let out a sigh and looked at him in confusion. "I was merely surveying the area. If I'm not permitted to look, how am I going to find the person I'm seeking for?" I raised an eyebrow at him and laughed a little at his words. "The way you looked at him can get your ass shot." I could tell this wasn't a joke by the serious way he stared at me. I took my time staring at him, and while I did, I felt a terrible fear that the man was going to shoot me. "Really, wait? Well, what a piece of duck dung. How should I proceed? Should I go apologize?" I quickly inquired. I didn't mean to come out as cruel; he was just too gorgeous to ignore. Ethan gave a little snort. Just avoid staring at him, please. You have a mean resting b***h face, Sophie. I'm not sure whether you've heard of this. You appeared as though you were prepared to battle him or something." He murmured, "I made a fool of myself when I laughed and choked on my drink." and in front of a large crowd. "Hey! That may have come up a couple times.
