The Unexpected Conversation.

Aria walked outside to ease herself up from the hurt. The wind played gently across the wide, open field behind the east wing of Harmony College. Most students were either in the library or still in class, but Aria had drifted here like a shadow, unseen and unneeded. Her heart still ached from the brutal humiliation earlier that morning. The words Josh spat at her, the mocking laughter of the students as they repeated his rejection like it was breaking news it all stung deeply. She wrapped her arms around her knees as she sat alone on the dry grass, her chin resting on them. She stared blankly at the horizon, her eyes glassy. It felt like everything in this school was designed to remind her she didn’t belong there, her clothes, her shoes, even the food she packed in her faded brown bag. Her presence was like a loud whisper in a room full of silk voices. But out here, there was no one to laugh at. No one stares too. Only the breeze, the soft rustle of leaves, and her thoughts. Minutes passed and she became so drawn to her world that she lost count of them. Until she felt it, an odd shift in the air beside her. It was not cold, not threatening. Just… presence. Her eyes flicked sideways and she froze. Sitting a few inches away from her, legs casually stretched out in front of him, was him. Danny. The school's great Danny. The golden boy. The most talked-about student at Harmony. The mystery she couldn't understand. The legend of their time. The one people whispered about in fear and admiration alike. His name was a thread woven into every conversation, his charisma, his looks, his power, and most of all, his influence. Aria’s breath hitched. He didn’t say anything. He simply looked ahead, a relaxed expression on his face, as though this was a normal Tuesday afternoon and he sat beside people like her every day. Which he absolutely didn’t and it was obvious. She quickly looked away, her heart thudding wildly. What was happening? Why was he here? Did someone send him? Was this another joke? After what felt like an eternity of silence, his voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. “Nice weather today,” he said. She blinked. The deep warmth of his tone threw her off. She dared a glance. “Y-Yes… it is.” He turned slightly toward her. “I didn’t get your name yesterday.” Her stomach twisted. Yesterday. The memory of him handing her his handkerchief in the hallway, how everyone had stared, how the crowd parted for him, how her shame had been soothed just a bit by that one small kindness. “I… I’m Aria,” she said quietly. He nodded. “I’m Danny.” She let out a shaky laugh, nervous. “Everyone knows that.” A small smirk tugged at his lips. “Fair point.” For a moment, silence again. This time, it was not heavy. Just… still. “You like it here?” he asked. Aria shrugged. “I’m still trying to figure it out. Most people already know each other. It feels like there’s an invisible club I missed the invitation to.” Danny chuckled, an actual chuckle and Aria nearly fell over in shock. He laughed? “That’s probably because there is one,” he said. “The truth is most people here have known each other even before they got into college. Some family class s**t, so I totally understand. This place runs on power, not kindness. You either have status, or you don’t.” Aria tilted her head, surprised by his honesty. “So which one do you have?” she asked before she could stop herself. Danny looked at her for a moment. His eyes were like a quiet storm, still but filled with something intense. “I have enough,” he said simply. “But it’s not worth much when people don’t really know you.” That surprised her even more. “No one truly knows you?” she asked, hesitant. He shook his head. “They know what they want to see. Not who I am.” Aria stared at him. It was like peeling back the edge of a painting and finding a c***k underneath. Danny wasn’t just the perfect student with a powerful name. He sounded… lonely. “Then why are you sitting here?” she asked softly. “With me?” His eyes lingered on hers for a long moment. She didn’t dare breathe. “Because for once,” he said, “I wanted to sit with someone who wasn’t trying to impress me.” Her breath caught. He looked away again, letting the words settle like dust between them. They talked after that awkwardly at first, then more comfortably. About random things: the classes she found confusing, the hidden garden behind the music department, the cafeteria food Danny claimed had a secret stash of real desserts only select students were ever offered. She laughed at his sarcasm and even dared to tease him once. He grinned and she froze. Because that grin? It was real. No arrogance. No charm mask. Just... Danny. Time slipped through her fingers like sand. Until.. “There you are!” A sharp voice cut through the air like glass. Aria turned. It was Vivian. Tall and elegant as always. Dressed in a designer blazer and red boots that screamed wealth. Her eyes landed on Aria and instantly narrowed with disgust. “I’ve been looking everywhere,” she said, but her eyes were on Aria the whole time. “The Vice Chancellor wants to see you, Danny.” Danny sighed and stood, brushing grass from his trousers. “she couldn’t text?” Vivian ignored the question, linking her arm with his possessively. “Some things require a personal touch.” Danny’s gaze flicked back to Aria briefly. “I’ll see you around.” And then he let Vivian drag him away. But not before Vivian paused. She turned to Aria, her smile tight and dangerous. “Sweet moment,” she said. “But don’t get too comfortable. Not everyone in Harmony likes charity cases being bold.” And with that, she was gone. Aria sat there, her fingers curled tightly in the grass, heart racing from everything that just happened. Danny had spoken to her, laughed and even confided in her. And now she was suddenly on Vivian’s radar. And that was never a safe place to be.
