The din of carpenters’ hammers and saws echo through the theatre amidst the rumble of rolling carts laden with palettes of canvas and wood. Scaffolding is erected on which artists and craftsmen hand paint scenic drop curtains and construct three-dimensional wing and shutter sets.
The skillful stage design allows the sets to be cleared and stored easily between performances of the romantic opera La traviata and the fantasy ballet Le papillon. For Vera, this is her La Scala Americana. To sing the part of the tragic courtesan Violetta is the role of her lifetime, and to be a patron for the debut of a ballet company in San Francisco gives her a stature that few divas obtain.
