Chapter 6 unusual conversation

He led the way to his car, which, quite frankly, Harper was astounded by. It was a big 4x4 deluxe model that she didn't even know model, but looked like it had a hefty price tag. He went to the passenger side and opened it up. She gently hopped into the seat and looked around. It even smelt of money. She felt uncomfortable and like she didn't fit. He went round the other side and hopped in the driver's seat and buckled his" seatbelt". He gestured to her. "ill be okay" " Seatbelt" he said again, with a little more oomph. She grabbed it and clicked it in. Very effortlessly he sped off and drove round the corner. "Have you got time?" he kept his gaze ahead, straight at the road. "I wanted to sleep, but I suppose I have a choice?" Harper could feel a headache coming and her bed was calling "You always have a choice." "Okay, where are we going?" "Just somewhere I like". His hand smoothed round the wheel as he took corners without hesitation. It was a good thing no one was out at that time. She didn't know how drunk he was, but she knew he was a good driver. "Who are you?" " Sorry what?" Harper's gaze fell on his hand which flicked the radio on. He turned the volume down to a minimum, so it was just below the listening volume and they could talk. "Who are you and why did I feel that pull?" so he had felt the same thing. "I'm Harper, I was born and raised here. I live round the corner, I'm just a normal girl." "No you're not", eyes still locked on the road. "yes i am?" " Listen, I walk into a lot of bars. I meet a lot of women. I have a lot of interactions. I've never had that feeling before with another person". He had the same feeling she did. "I don't know what the f***s are going on. I had a weird 48 hours, but you're telling me you had the same feeling I did?" His gaze flicked momentarily to her and back to the road. "So you had it too?" "Um, yeah, it was weird. I've never had it before." "never?" "never. "So we're in the same boat?" " f*****g same boat are we on the same continent?" "I don't know why I want to know who you are?" " Who the hell are you? So far I know, your name is dean, and you drive a fancy-ass car, and your watch costs as much as my yearly salary!" He looked at the shiny watch on his wrist. He chuckled "You know your watches?" "I know money. I grew up around it but never really had it, so yeah I got it. You're a rich guy who found a young attractive girl and wants your piece" Harper rolled her eyes and scooched her legs to the opposite side. Dean looked at Harper with a quizzical look. "Or I just want to get to know you Or "Yes, I heard that before." "Who's your family?" Harper took a breath. She didn't know why she felt she trusted this man, and she wouldn't normally go into details about who she was. She never spoke to men about her family, just because of shame and embarrassment. She stood tight-lipped. "Not going to open up?" "nope" "Very stubborn" "Have to be" "Okay, I'll start with mine. Dean Glassfield. I own 2 or 3 companies and have finance and property within my family. My father and my father's father built ther companies from the ground up, and now we reap the benefits. So yes, I have money. But we worked hard for it." "Everyone works hard" He paused, as if he had never been spoken to like this before. "I've watched people pull 72-hour shifts for next to nothing just to feed their family. You can't put a value on human life. Everyone works hard. You just have different opportunities". Harper couldn't stop the words from tumbling out and felt bad after she had said it, but she did agree with them. "Everyone has an opportunity. No one takes it. I made the right choice." "Some people don't have a choice." Again he paused, almost like she had made him think. "You are disconnected from reality and live a great life. But there are plenty of people working just as hard as you and still make the right choices but aren't given the opportunity. Maybe money has got to your head." Harper felt firm in what she was saying like never before. "Did your parents work hard?" "My mum did." "And your dad?" Harper shut up. Tight-lipped. He looked over and registered that he had hit a nerve. "Dad not here?" "Dad ran off with someone better and never turned up again. He's happy somewhere where he doesn't have to be around us. I don't care where he is as long as he doesn't come back. I'm fine with him being happy." Silence. Dean's gaze shifted to her again, and he ignored the tear that had rolled down her cheek. "I'm sorry that happened to you." "I don't need your apology." "No you don't, but I'll give it on his behalf." Harper felt confused and unlike anything before. She had never had an interaction like this before, not with someone with so much power and money and fortune. She hated it, and yet her body still felt the same pull that wasn't going away. The car stopped. They had been driving for about 20 minutes, and it seemed they had arrived. " here get out" "Where are we?" " Somewhere important to me, so don't show it to anyone else because I don't want it flocked with normal people" Normal people? Harper pushed the door handle and jumped out of the car. They were at the top of a hill in th middle of god knows where there were trees scattered around and a clearing of grass. She could see the city not far off, so she didn't panic, but she knew she would probably have to end up walking home. Dean walked round to her side, and without warning picked her up and popped her up on the roof of the car without any sort of hesitation, like she weighed nothing. She let out a little yelp, and he laughed and then effortlessly jumped up next to her. "lay down" harper felt funny "why?" "lay down" She laid back and looked up. The sky was clear, and stars were in detail she never had seen before. Constellations popped out from everywhere ones she had never seen in the city. Her mouth opened wide as she looked up at a bright night sky that she had seen before and yet never seen before. Dean was laid next to her, just slightly touching her arms, enough to feel him, but not too much. "Sometimes I come here late at night and look at the sky and wonder what is out there. Who's out there? What caused us to be here and why we are here". Her gaze was locked on the sky. She turned and looked as if he had read his mind from when she was a little girl. "same" He dropped his look at her in disbelief, as if he had never told anyone that or if he did because someone had called him stupid for it. For a momentary second, Harper saw a little boy with dreams and hopes and fantasies just like her. Without a thought, she pulled her hand up to his face and softly held it. Crickets in the background, the breeze, gently flowing leaves rustling from the surrounding trees and silence. And then suddenly, without a thought, he leaned to kiss her.
