Chapter 9 - The doctor

1087 Words
The next day arrived with a mix of determination and anxiety as Darlene and I headed to Las Vegas Medical Hospital. The sun beat down on us, contrasting with the heavy emotions that weighed on my heart. I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation as we approached the bustling hospital. Entering the hospital, we navigated through a sea of people rushing about, each absorbed in their own urgent matters. The reception area was a flurry of activity, with patients checking in and out, nurses coordinating care, and doctors dashing off to attend to emergencies. I approached the reception desk, where a nurse was frantically sorting through files and answering phone calls. She seemed overwhelmed, and I hesitated for a moment before mustering the courage to speak up. "Excuse me," I began, trying to get the nurse's attention. She barely spared a glance in my direction, clearly preoccupied with her duties. "Doctor Daryl, please," I requested, my voice soft amid the hospital's chaos. Without looking up, the nurse replied curtly, "Room 609." Grateful for the information, I offered a quick, "Thank you," though I wasn't sure she even heard it. Darlene and I followed the signs toward the elevators, ready to make our way to room 609. Inside the elevator, I couldn't shake the feeling of nervous anticipation that coursed through me. This was uncharted territory for me, and I couldn't help but worry about what lay ahead. As the elevator began its ascent, I glanced at Darlene, who offered me a reassuring smile. It helped to have her by my side, a steadfast friend supporting me in this audacious endeavor. We knew the stakes were high, but I was ready to take the plunge into the unknown. Upon arriving at the 6th floor, I was immediately struck by the bustling atmosphere. This floor was dedicated to outpatient care, and it seemed like every room was occupied. Patients shuffled in and out, some in wheelchairs, others with family members in tow, all enveloped in their own world of concerns and ailments. The echoing cacophony of hushed conversations, medical equipment beeping, and footsteps added to the organized chaos. Darlene leaned in, her voice barely audible over the commotion, and asked what had been lingering on her mind. "Marghie, are you sure this is the right time to approach Daryl? It's so busy here, and he might be swamped with patients." I paused for a moment, her words sinking in. She had a point. The timing was far from ideal, but the urgency of the situation spurred me on. "I know, Darlene," I replied, my voice equally hushed. "But we can't afford to wait any longer. This might be our only chance to find him. Let's just be discreet." We navigated through the corridor with caution, scanning the room numbers as we went. Room 609 came into view, and I noticed that there was no nameplate indicating the doctor responsible for the space. It was a minor setback, but I couldn't let it deter me. Taking a deep breath, I seized the opportunity when a patient exited the room. Without further hesitation, I slipped inside, my heart pounding with a mix of anxiety and determination. I found myself face to face with a tall man who was completely engrossed in organizing patient records. I couldn't be certain, but he seemed to fit the description of Doctor Daryl. This was it, the moment I had been waiting for. It was time to finally confront him about John's actions and the turmoil it had caused in my life. My emotions were a turbulent sea, but I knew that I had to find answers and take control of the situation. As the man turned around to face me, I was taken aback by his striking appearance. He was undeniably handsome, and I couldn't help but wonder if this was really Daryl. He looked to be around the same age as John, adding to my confusion. Could this be the man who had raised John and supported him all these years? My heart pounded in my chest as I took a deep breath and, with trembling hands, seated myself in front of him. He looked at me with a faint smile, seemingly unaware of the turmoil inside me. "Are you the next patient?" he asked, glancing at the patient form, which, to my surprise, indicated an appointment for an elderly man. My anxiety intensified as I tried to find the right words, but my determination to make John suffer pushed me forward. I shook my head, my voice quivering slightly as I spoke. "No, I'm not the next patient. My name is Marghie," I said, my tone unsteady. "And, well, I have something else to discuss with you." The doctor arched an eyebrow, clearly perplexed by my sudden appearance and the unconventional nature of the conversation. He seemed like a kind and understanding person, but I couldn't let that deter me from my mission. With a deep breath, I decided to lay it all on the line. "Doctor, I know this might sound strange, but I need to ask you something," I began, my voice steadier now. "Would you be willing to go on a date with me? Or, maybe even consider the possibility of... getting married?" His expression shifted from confusion to utter shock. He clearly hadn't expected this turn of events, and his stunned silence hung heavy in the air as I anxiously awaited his response. The doctor's laughter sent a wave of embarrassment coursing through me. He probably thought I was joking or had some sort of mental issue, and I couldn't blame him for reacting that way. But I was determined to see this through, to make John feel the same hurt he had caused me. "No, Doctor, I'm not hungry, and I don't have any mental problems," I replied firmly, shaking my head again. My frown deepened as I prepared to take my next bold step. Without giving him a chance to react, I quickly walked over to where he was sitting, leaned in, and planted a kiss on his lips. It was a bold move, one that I had never imagined myself doing, but it was all part of my plan to get back at John. The doctor's eyes widened in shock, and he pulled away, his expression a mixture of surprise and confusion. I could see that he was trying to make sense of what had just happened, and I braced myself for his reaction.
