Wealthy mining magnate, Griffith J. Griffith, envisioned a space in central Los Angeles that would rival New York’s Central Park. Griffith Park was no stranger to crime. Fitting, given that Griffith tried to murder his wife in 1903 and served two years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon. There’s a statue of him on Los Feliz Boulevard. Los Angeles has a short memory.
The Old Zoo was abandoned in 1965, the animals moved a few miles north. A maze of stone enclosures that were once large fenced-in exhibits. Hikers can wander through the places that once held lions and tigers. It had become one of the more inviting tourist attractions in the park.
