Back out on the street, Nick looked back at the building that had essentially been his home for the last three years. He was going to miss being a cop, but it never was what he wanted. It was the smart move when his mother got sick. Gave him purpose. Gave him focus. But he’d always wanted to be a private investigator. Now all he needed was a partner. “Any tearful goodbyes?” The Queen asked. Her hair was up in a simple ponytail. She was wearing dark jeans and a forest green v-neck t-shirt. Her leg was in a brace. She looked unbelievable. “My partner wished me an interesting farewell,” Nick said. “You ready for the next chapter?” she asked. “First, I gotta figure out what kind of book I’m in,” he said. “What, like a mystery or a romance?” she gave him a smile that would melt diamonds.
