Nick knew that there was one big hole in the narrative. He had the text attributed to Ray, but he couldn’t justify being in the mountains already when he received it. There was something else he had to do or say. Something to shorten the timeline. He was on his own again. He was staring at the mashed corpse in front of him. Didn’t know who it was. Assumed it was Malkin, but didn’t know why Lauren hated him so much. Why Ray had looked relieved. Why Boom-Boom had bashed his head into nothing. There had to be some way to connect the Shadow Dance in the backpack. Someone in the story who couldn’t refute Nick’s testimony when he gave his deposition, but all the players in this tragedy were dead or gone. He figured s**t out. This is what he did. But there was nothing. Nothing sounded real. P
