Chapter 1

Adrian Ramirez adjusted his tie, the knot feeling tighter around his neck than it should have. The mirror in front of him reflected a man who had it all — money, power, and an effortless charm that made everyone in Montefiore either envy or admire him. Yet, none of it mattered. Not the sleek suits, the high-rise office, or the fiancée who appeared perfect in every way. He glanced at his phone, where a message from his fiancée, Dawn Villamor, flashed on the screen: *Dinner at 8. Don’t be late.* He let out a frustrated sigh. Dinner at some posh restaurant, pretending to be the picture-perfect couple. Pretending everything was fine. But it wasn’t, and he knew it. This engagement was a business deal, nothing more. His heart wasn’t in it — not with Dawn, not with any of this. His father’s voice echoed in his mind, reminding him of the importance of this union, of the power that came with the merger of their families. He had no choice. This was the life he was destined for. A knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts. It was **Jacob Alonzo**, his best friend and business partner. “You ready?” Jacob asked, leaning against the doorframe. “We have a flight to catch.” Adrian grabbed his suit jacket, not bothering to mask his annoyance. “San Ricardo. Middle of nowhere,” he muttered. “Why do I have to be the one to go?” Jacob smirked. “Your father wants you to oversee the project personally. It’s an investment, remember? They’re expanding the land for commercial development.” Adrian shot him a glare. “I know, I just don’t see why I have to leave Montefiore for it. This place... this is where things happen. What’s there in San Ricardo?” “Peace and quiet, I imagine,” Jacob teased. “Might do you some good to get out of here for a bit. Who knows? You might like it.” Adrian rolled his eyes but said nothing. He doubted it. --- **San Ricardo** Elena Salvador pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose as she scanned the dusty pages of her notebook. She sat on the steps of the town’s library, her two best friends, **Emanuele Reyes** and **Portia Sandoval**, sprawled out on the grass beside her. The sun was warm, the air fresh, and everything about the town felt like home. It was quiet, just the way Elena liked it. Emanuele yawned dramatically. “Elena, you’ve been studying for hours. What exactly are you cramming for? There’s no big test coming up.” “I’m not cramming,” Elena replied, eyes still fixed on her notes. “I’m preparing.” “For what?” Portia laughed, twirling a strand of her hair. “You’re already top of the class. You need to relax.” Elena finally looked up, blinking against the sun. “Relaxing is for when there’s nothing left to learn.” Emanuele nudged Portia. “She’s hopeless.” Portia grinned. “That’s why we love her.” They all burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the quiet town square. As much as Elena enjoyed their teasing, she knew they were right. She was always focused, always serious. While her friends went out on dates or spent their time socializing, she stayed buried in her books. She was popular, sure — the guys in town noticed her, but she never gave any of them the time of day. She was too busy for romance. Too busy to care. “Speaking of relaxing,” Emanuele said, sitting up. “I heard some city guys are coming in for that big project they’re starting outside town. Maybe we’ll finally see some excitement around here.” “City guys?” Elena raised an eyebrow. “Great, just what we need. More noise.” Portia sighed. “You say that now, but wait until you meet one of them. I bet they’re nothing like the boys here.” Elena rolled her eyes. “I’m not interested in city boys.” She returned to her notebook, but the thought of outsiders coming into San Ricardo lingered. Her town was quiet, peaceful. She didn’t like the idea of that changing. --- Later that afternoon, Elena found herself walking past the town’s main road, heading toward the open fields where she loved to think. The air here was different — clean, unhurried. It was her escape from everything. But today, the usual stillness was interrupted by the sound of cars. Big, sleek cars. She turned just in time to see a black SUV pull up to the edge of the field. A man stepped out, adjusting his sunglasses. His posture screamed arrogance, and his expensive suit was completely out of place in the provincial setting. Elena frowned. He didn’t belong here. And she was sure he knew it too. The man — *Adrian Ramirez*, though she didn’t know that yet — looked around the area with a mix of disdain and disinterest. His eyes swept over the fields, the quiet streets, and finally landed on her. For a moment, their eyes met. He gave her a once-over, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face before he dismissed her as if she was part of the scenery. Elena felt a surge of irritation. She didn’t know who he was, but she already didn’t like him. Adrian, on the other hand, looked at her for a brief moment before turning his attention back to his phone. San Ricardo was already proving to be exactly what he had imagined — dull, backward, and suffocating.
