Assalamu alaikum" the woman and whom I assumed to be her husband said at the same time.
"Wa Alaikumussalam " I answered. Come in please. I escort them to the living room. They both sat on the same sofa and I sat on the one opposite them. Adeel stepped forward from where he has been standing and shook hands with the man offering greetings. It seems like he did not know them too. Who could they be?
"I'm Usman and this is my wife ummu. We are your neighbors." He answered my Un asked question.
"I'm Adeel and my wife jidda." He sat down next to me. What is wrong with him? Get up! Get up! You Better stop this show up. Who are you kidding?
"Yeah, she's very stubborn even though she is not feeling well she insisted we come today and right now." Usman smiled at his wife.
And she hit him. Pouting her lips." I'm not stubborn. I'm fine. Your not even a doctor how do you know that I'm not feeling well."
"My senses! I just know." He shrugged his shoulders.
"Your dumb. She stared at him in wonder." They seems to forget we are here.
I stared at them. It seems I missed some part of the conversation. They look cute. I didn't realize I was smiling until ummu beamed at me with one of her own smile.
"Don't mind her." Adeel cut in. "They are all like that. She's been nagging me for ice cream all day. It's annoying."
I turned to look at him. My mouth half open. He surely took the wrong medicine this time. Is he playing couple with me?
Ummu's eyes widened, grinning she look at me expectantly. "Are you?" Damn! She thinks I'm pregnant.
"Nope she's not." Adeel answered her. She just had a thing for ice cream. She's very persistent when she wants one.
I excused myself to get them some refreshment.
"I will help you with that," Adeel followed trailing behind me. The moment I entered the kitchen. I turned back to face the tall creature.
"What are you doing I asked him?"
"Helping you get the drinks."
"Stop playing dumb!" He's Soo annoying. "what are you doing?"
He smiled at me. His dimples popping out. Damn that smile. Damn those dimples. Don't smile. Don't smile.
"What are you doing? Whatever it is you should stop it. "
"I'm just helping you. You stared at those couples as if you are watching a TV show. I'm helping to know what it feels like."
"You are clueless. You were annoying me instead. Get out of this kitchen."
"You have to give me something to take there first."
I pushed a tray into his hands. I picked two bottles of water. An orange juice and an apple one. I placed them on his tray. "Go I will bring the rest."
"Don't come out with your face like that. They will think we had a fight."
I just rolled my eyes and continued with the task at hand.
Ummu is a very cheerful woman. In this few minutes I just realized we have alot in common. It's easy to talk to her. The conversation flow smoothly among the four of us. So far today is the most exciting day of my marriage. I Soo don't want it to end.
Ummu whispered something in her husband ear and he turned to look at us.
"We want to invite you for dinner tomorrow if you are not doing anything." Usman asked looking at us expectantly
Ummu looked at me and I turned to look at Adeel. The little devil inside him will say no.
"Jidda, you free by then?" Adeel asked giving me a look I couldn't comprehend.
"I don't think I have anything to do. I will be free." I smiled.
Is that a yes ummu asked excitedly.
"I guess so." Adeel answered.
"Thank you. We will get going then. See you tomorrow." Usman rose and Adeel walked him to the door.
We trail behind them exchanging phone numbers.
I'm also excited with the idea of going out tomorrow. I'm feeling like a free bird right now.
We escorted them to the gate and exchanged our goodbyes. I turned to leave when Adeel grabbed my arm and jerked me backwards. I tumble a bit before gaining my composure. Frowning my face. I turned to look at him. It's dark and I couldn't make out his face clearly.
"Why did you say you are free? "
"What?" Is he kidding me?
"Have you lost your hearing young woman? "
"I... I.. What was I supposed to say then?" I answered honestly.
"You should have said your busy." You knew that was what I was expecting.
I jerked my arm away from his hold. "You should have told them we couldn't if you didn't want to. Why will you make me do it? How will I know what you want me to say? am I a mind reader?"
He didn't respond. He just smiled looking ahead of me. This doesn't seem right. I tried to look for what he is watching.
"Jidda," he called softly.
"Don't freak out. Don't freak out okay?"
I stayed rigid. His getting me scared. "What is it?"
"It seems to be a cat. Behind you." I screamed. Running to hide behind him. I gripped his shirt. I'm not over dramatic. Believe me cat and I don't stay in the same place at same time. "Where is it? Please take it away." I stand on my toes afraid it will touch my legs.
He burst out laughing clenching his stomach.
Damn him. I pushed him and walk around to look at his face.
He didn't stop laughing. The sound of his laughter filled the silent night. I stared at him even though I couldn't see his face very well. This is beautiful. My anger long gone.
"Scary baby! Even Nawal is not scared of cats. What are you? Five?" He teased.
I rolled my eyes. "Don't do that again!"
"I will do it again and again" he laughed.
"You should always be like this." I blurted out
"What?"
"I mean don't be scary. Just be like this."
"Am I scary? "
"Yeah. I like you better when you are like this."
"You like me? Just say it that you like me. "
"You are hopeless! I didn't mean that kind of like you are thinking of. "
"Who said I was thinking of something else. You are hopeless. "
"Whatever" I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm sleepy good night."
"Let's escort you to your door first yan mata." (young lady)
