CHAPTER TEN Estella had been apprehended by the United States Army. The poor girl who had nowhere to go and no one to go to stood accused of being a mass-murderer. She was alone and defenseless. I had heard stories of what the Army did to women they considered enemies. I knew how they treated women on the street. Estella could very well be killed, or worse. I found out the circumstances of her capture sometime after the fact. Every new detail I discovered made me feel worse and worse. Estella had been fired and evicted in the middle of the night. Before that, after the screaming died down, she escaped from my room and locked herself away in one of the second-floor bathrooms. She sobbed and frantically apologized through the door, all while Ms. Price was recklessly gathering her belonging
