Chapter2

And I was at the beautiful garden again. I have never understood where it came from or whether it even exists somewhere in the real world. There are deep red roses everywhere, their sweet scent filling the air, and a fountain in the middle of the garden that never stops running. And then there he was, standing beside the fountain, waiting for me as he always did. The moment he saw me, his face softened. Even after four years, I still couldn’t get used to how breathtaking he was. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a strong, perfectly shaped body that made the simple black shirt he wore look comfortably good on him. His light-brown hair was slightly messy, as though he’d run his fingers through it while waiting for me, and a few strands fell naturally over his forehead. His face looked almost too perfect to belong to a real human being. A strong and pointed jaw, straight nose, sharp cheekbones and full red lips that always seemed to make me go crazy each time I stare at them. But it was his eyes that always got me. They were warm and deep, the kind of eyes that made me feel seen even when he said nothing. When those eyes found mine, his entire face melted. And there it was. That smile. The one that made my heart forget every terrible thing waiting for me outside this dream. He had dimples when he smiled. His teeth are perfectly arranged by God himself. “You’re late, and you look very tired.” He said, walking toward me. I smiled. “I had a bad day.” I admitted. “And yes, I’m tired but I’m here now.” He reached for my hand, and the moment our fingers touched, warmth spread through me. He pulled me into his chest and hugged me so tightly, like I would disappear if he let go. I still didn’t understand how something that wasn’t real could feel so real. “How bad?” he asked. I looked into his beautiful blue eyes and swallowed. “Very bad.” “Tell me about it.” He demanded. I looked away. I never told him the whole truth. I didn’t want him to know how bad things had become. I didn’t want his beautiful smile to disappear because of me. So I shook my head. “Nothing worth talking about. I’d rather just be here with you.” He studied my face for a moment, his eyes moving over every part of it as though he were trying to memorize me. “It’s nothing to worry yourself about seriously.” He didn’t ask again. He simply pulled me into his arms. I closed my eyes against his chest. For the first time that day, I could breathe. “I missed you,” I whispered. His arms tightened around me. “I missed you too.” I smiled. He pulled away, reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. My eyes widened as he opened it, revealing a beautiful diamond necklace that sparkled beneath the moonlight. At the center was a delicate pendant customized with the letter E. “It’s gorgeous,” I whispered. He smiled, his eyes fixed on me. “You’re even more gorgeous.” Heat rushed to my cheeks. I lowered my eyes, unable to hide my smile. Then I turned around and gathered my hair to one side, giving him room to wear it on me. He stepped closer. I felt his fingers gently brush through my hair as he moved it away from my neck. A moment later, I felt the cool chain settle against my skin. His fingers lingered for a second before he fastened the clasp. “There,” he murmured. I turned back to him, touching the little E pendant with my fingertips. I couldn’t hold my smile. No one had ever given me anything so beautiful. And, coming from him, it felt worth more than all the diamonds in the world. I rested my head on his broad chest. “Do you think you’ll ever find me?” I asked He pulled away and looked into my eyes. “I know I will.” “How?” “I don’t know.” He brushed his thumb across my cheek as he looked right into my eyes. “I don’t know how. I don’t know when. But I’ve loved you for four years, even though I’ve never seen you when I’m awake. I won’t stop looking until I can hold your hand for real.” I laughed softly. “You say that every time.” “And I’ll keep saying it until it happens.” I looked at him, wishing I could stay there forever. Then he whispered the words again, and that made my heart ache. “One day, Elise, I’ll find you.” I smiled. I didn’t know how possible that promise was. I didn’t know who he was. I don’t even know if he was real and I certainly didn’t know where he lived. With one finger, he tilted my head back and made me look him in the eyes. Our eyes locked for what felt like eternity. Then he tangled his mouth with mine. We kissed deeply, hungrily, like he’d always wanted to do this. I didn’t stop him. If anything, I didn’t want him to stop. It was the first time he’d kissed me. His mouth tasted so good. It was so sweet, I didn’t want it to end. By the time I woke up, he was gone. But I could still feel his taste on me. I touched my lips, and a smile crossed my face. I was blushing. His promise had given me hope. He had promised he would find me. And I believe him. But until he did, I would survive every hell they threw at me.
