“Miss Lilac, the Duke and Duchess have forgiven you because, after all, you are their daughter.”
A maid dressed in light colored clothes spoke softly, but her eyes quietly examined Lilac, as if trying to judge the woman standing before her.
“Forgiven me?”
The words sounded absurd the moment they reached Lilac’s ears.
A faint smile appeared on her lips, though there was no warmth behind it.
“Forgiven me for what?” Lilac asked calmly. “Tell me, what crime did I commit? Because I would like to know.”
Her gaze turned cold.
“Was my crime being born into this world by two selfish people who cared more about their fame, power, and meaningless reputation than their own child?”
The maid’s expression stiffened.
“Miss Lilac, we have been authorized to use force if you refuse to return with us.”
Her gentle expression quickly disappeared, replaced by one of displeasure.
“You can try.”
Lilac smiled, but it was a smile that held no kindness.
Without another word, she turned and walked toward the mansion behind her , the home her teacher had built for her years ago.
The maid froze in surprise.
She had been told that the Second Miss lived in an old, broken down thatched house in the countryside.
But what stood before her was nothing like that.
A magnificent mansion stretched across the land, its grandeur reaching as far as the eye could see. It was a place that spoke of power and wealth, completely contradicting the rumours she had heard.
“Let’s go.”
Lilac’s voice pulled the maid back to reality.
The maid looked away from the mansion and followed her, still unable to hide her shock.
“Please step into the carriage, Lady Lilac.”
She gestured toward the simple carriage waiting by the roadside.
Lilac glanced at it.
Her eyes immediately filled with undisguised disbelief.
This was the carriage they sent to welcome their daughter home?
Hmph.
This is what they prepared for the daughter they supposedly missed?
“The Duchess personally arranged and prepared everything for your return, Lady Lilac,” the maid explained.
Lilac let out a soft laugh.
“Oh? So, simply put, my father’s other wife , my stepmother ,sent a carriage that isn’t even fit for a goat to pick up the stepdaughter she supposedly treasures and cherishes?”
The maid’s face paled.
“Lady Lilac… what do you mean? Are you saying you are unwilling to return home?”
A hint of panic entered her voice.
The Duchess had given her one order .Bring Lilac back no matter what.
Even if force was required.
But if Lilac refused to return or worse, disappeared , she would be the one to suffer the consequences.
“Are you nervous?”
Lilac suddenly whispered.
She looked directly into the maid’s eyes, causing the woman to freeze.
“Don’t worry. I have to return home someday.”
A small, mysterious smile appeared on her face.
“So why not now?”
With that, Lilac turned and gracefully stepped into the carriage.
“Let’s go.”
Her voice came from inside.
The carriage slowly began moving away from the magnificent mansion, leaving behind the place that had been her sanctuary for so many years.
As she looked ahead, Lilac’s eyes carried a trace of amusement.
Dear Duchess…
I cannot wait to see what you have prepared for me.
