The next morning, Mark left Sophie's room to get some coffee from the hospital cafeteria. Upon his return, he found Aiden inside Sophie's room, tampering with her medical equipment. Mark's fury at Aiden for hurting Sophie and causing the death of their unborn child boiled over, and he attacked Aiden.
Aiden heard Mark enter the room. He turned with a smirk on his face " I told you I would be back".
Mark grabbed Aiden by the collar and threw him against the wall. "What did you do ?!" Mark shouted at him. Suddenly the machine were going crazy. Sophie's blood pressure and oxygen levels were plummeting.
Aiden looked up at Mark and in a cold cruel tone " I just came to finish the job."
The medical staff came rushing into the room. Working to save Sophie's life. Mark dragged Aiden out of the room. Aiden tried to push Mark away, but Mark was stronger and pushed him back against the wall. "Stay away from her, Aiden. If I ever catch you near her again, I swear to God, I will kill you," Mark threatened.
Sophie woke up in the middle of the night, her eyes adjusting to the dim light in the room. As she looked around, her gaze fell upon Mark standing by the window. From his attire - a simple t-shirt and jeans - she knew that he had not left the hospital. His normally neat black hair was now disheveled, and the stubble on his face indicated that he had not shaved in a while. She recognized the signs of exhaustion and worry etched on his face. "Mark," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Sophie tried to speak but her throat was dry and scratchy. Mark immediately noticed and hurriedly went to her side, offering her some water from the bedside table. Sophie took a few sips and then asked, her voice barely above a whisper, "What happened?"
Mark took a deep breath before answering. "You were attacked, Sophie. Aiden hurt you badly."
Sophie's eyes widened with shock and confusion. "Aiden? But why?"
Mark's face hardened with anger as he recounted the events of that fateful night. Sophie listened in horror as he told her about Aiden's affair and the violent outburst that led to her hospitalization.
Sophie's hand went to her stomach, where she had just learned she had lost their baby. Tears filled her eyes as the weight of the loss hit her. Mark took her hand in his and squeezed it gently.
"I'm so sorry, Sophie," he whispered, his voice heavy with emotion. "I wish I could have protected you and our baby."
Sophie squeezed his hand back, silently grateful for his presence and support.
As they entered the house, Sophie looked around and saw the mess left from when Aiden and his friends had been staying there. She couldn't stand the thought of being in the same house as him. Mark, sensing her discomfort, reassured her that he would clean everything up and make sure Aiden wouldn't come near her again.
Sophie went to the bedroom to rest while Mark started cleaning. As he was going through some old boxes, he found a picture of himself and Sophie from his college days. He realized then that he had always had feelings for her, but had never acted on them because of his loyalty to his brother.
Sophie, meanwhile, was trying to process everything that had happened. She couldn't believe that Aiden had been so cruel and abusive to her, and she felt guilty for not seeing it sooner. She knew that she needed to start over and build a new life for herself and the baby that she had lost.
Mark came into the room, seeing that Sophie was lost in thought. He sat down next to her and took her hand. "We'll get through this, Sophie," he said softly. "I'll be here for you every step of the way."
Mark noticed Sophie's distance and hesitancy in their interactions, he knew deep down that their relationship was damaged beyond repair. He too felt the weight of the pain and trauma that had built up between them.
Sophie took a deep breath and turned to face Mark. "Mark, I don't think we can do this. As much as I love you, there's just too much pain and trauma attached to us. I don't know if I can ever fully trust again, and I don't want to hold you back from finding happiness."
Mark's eyes filled with sadness, but he knew that Sophie was right. "I understand, Sophie. I don't want you to feel like you have to stay with me out of obligation. You deserve to be with someone who can give you the love and security you need."
Sophie reached out and took Mark's hand, giving it a squeeze. "Thank you for understanding. I will always cherish the time we had together."
Mark gave her a small smile. "Me too, Sophie. I just want you to be happy."
With that, they both knew that it was time to let go and move on. It wouldn't be easy, but they both knew it was the right thing to do.
