Chapter SEVEN For a second day in a row Tanner, with new worry lines pinching at the corners of his sightless eyes, left the house early and headed toward town where business awaited him. And Denise was alone, desperately alone. But now it mattered less. The knowledge of the scheme against him - her part in it - kept her from the naturalness she had known with him, kept her even from the dreams she had always entertained for them. She hoped Tanner didn't notice the change. She hoped that the worry and corruption was hidden deep enough within her own body that he could not recognize the signs.
