Chapter NINE Denise packed only one bag with the bare necessities in it. Her clothes, the, keepsakes Tanner had given her, all were left behind in her room at the exact places where they had always rested. She would take nothing of his with her to deepen the ache of her heart. After she clicked the latches shut on the suitcase, Denise looked around the room a last time, feasting upon it for all the years of memories that were ahead - all that she would have left of her few happy weeks with Tanner. She walked to the vanity, found paper and pencil in a drawer and tried to write a note. But words would not come. Expression of the deep emotions she felt were quite beyond her. So she scratched only the few words that would tell Tanner that the station wagon would be at the depot in the city
