Moments later, the door opened again.
Beatrice thought Zander had come back.
But it wasn't him. It was Warren—her father.
Beatrice choked out, "Dad."
Warren sighed. "It's good you're out. It's good you're free."
After Vanessa died, Beatrice craved familial love more than ever.
Warren hadn't visited her once in three years of prison. But he was still her only family left in the world.
Warren asked, "What do you plan to do now?"
She didn't want anyone to know she planned to leave the country yet.
Beatrice shook her head and said, "I haven't decided."
Warren said, "Come home with me."
Beatrice looked up at Warren, her eyes wet.
She'd lived with Vanessa after her parents' divorce. Warren had only cared about his new family.
'So he still loves me.'
But Beatrice's moment of family warmth lasted less than a minute—it broke apart at once.
When she didn't answer right away, Warren lost his patience. He revealed his real reason for coming. "Everyone knows Wenda is Zander's wife now. Zander won't get a legal marriage certificate with her because of you. She's pregnant. Are you going to let her stay unmarried forever? She's your own sister!"
Warren hadn't cared about Beatrice out of nowhere. He'd only come for Wenda.
He wanted Beatrice to step aside and stop blocking Wenda's way.
'We are both his daughters. How could he be so unfair?'
When Warren saw she wouldn't agree, he snapped angrily, "End things with Zander right now! Look at yourself—you're an ex-con, you're crippled. Do you think you deserve him? Everyone sees them as a married couple. Are you going to be the other woman and ruin them?"
The other woman? Wenda and her mother, Darcy Ford, had been the other woman.
They got to be the mistress and the illegitimate child, and hurt Beatrice and Vanessa. But when his precious daughter was in trouble, Warren, who'd cheated, suddenly cared about morals.
Warren's love for Beatrice was gone completely the second he started a new family.
She would never go home with Warren or accept Darcy.
Warren was about to say more when Zander walked in.
As soon as Warren saw him, his whole expression changed. He asked worriedly, "Zander, how's Wenda? Are the test results all in?"
Wenda had nearly fallen, and Zander had rushed her off for checks right away.
Warren had come to the hospital for Wenda. Talking to Beatrice had just been an afterthought.
Zander nodded. "She's fine."
Warren let out a relieved sigh. "Now that Wenda is... When will you two get your marriage certificate?"
Maybe Zander had warned him. Warren held back and didn't say "pregnant" out loud.
Zander said firmly, "We agreed the wedding was fake—just to stabilize the board. The woman I'm really going to marry is Beatrice. She's the only one who's ever truly cared about me. I love her, and she loves me."
'He wants to marry me, but he's gotten Wenda pregnant.'
Beatrice couldn't understand him at all.
He'd probably choose the pretty woman who'd run away and left him for dead over the crippled, scarred woman who'd taken the blame and gone to prison for him.
