At first, it wasn’t as hard as Lena feared.
They called every night, just like they promised. Messages flowed throughout the day—small check-ins, jokes, reminders that they were still part of each other’s lives.
“See?” Adrian said once. “Not so bad.”
Lena smiled. “Yeah… not so bad.”
She missed him, of course. Missed the physical presence, the small moments they used to share without thinking. But emotionally, they still felt close.
Or at least, she thought they did.
Weeks passed, and Lena adjusted to the new routine. She filled her time with work, friends, and responsibilities, all while keeping Adrian at the center of her world.
“Tell me about your day,” she would say during their calls.
And he would. Sometimes in detail, sometimes briefly. But she didn’t question it.
Not yet.
There were moments—small ones—where something felt slightly off. A delayed reply. A distracted tone. A conversation that ended too quickly.
But Lena brushed it aside.
“He’s just busy,” she told herself. “It’s a new job. A new environment.”
And maybe that was true.
So she held on—to the love, to the promises, to the version of them she believed still existed.
Because letting go had never crossed her mind.
