The night stretched long as Sarah sat beside Jack in his study. The dim light from the desk lamp cast shadows across his face, accentuating the hard lines of his jaw and the determined set of his mouth. Jack hadn’t said much since Gabriel left, but his intense focus on the maps and files spread across the desk was answer enough—he was already planning. “Jack.” Sarah finally spoke, her voice breaking the heavy silence. “What if Gabriel’s wrong? What if Kane isn’t interested in me at all?” Jack’s hand paused mid-turn of a page, his eyes lifting to meet hers. “Gabriel isn’t someone who deals in half-truths,” he said firmly. “If he says Kane has an interest in you, then it’s not something we can dismiss.” Sarah frowned, her fingers nervously twisting together in her lap. “But why me?
