PIECES OF A NEW BEGINNING

717 Words
Cecilia had started noticing something strange life was moving forward, even without her making a final choice. That realization both comforted and unsettled her. It was a Saturday afternoon when she met Neema at their usual spot, a small juice place tucked between busy streets. Neema was already there, scrolling through her phone, but looked up immediately when Cecilia arrived. “You’re late,” Neema said, raising an eyebrow. “I’m thinking more these days,” Cecilia replied, sitting down. “It slows me down.” Neema smirked. “Or maybe you’re just avoiding people.” Cecilia didn’t deny it. “Maybe I am,” she admitted. Before Neema could respond, another voice joined them. “So this is where you’ve been hiding.” Cecilia turned and smiled. “Amina.” Amina pulled a chair and sat, looking between the two of them. “You disappeared on us. No calls, no updates… nothing.” “I needed space,” Cecilia said simply. Amina leaned forward. “Space from who? Them… or yourself?” That question hit differently. Cecilia paused. “Both, I think.” The three sat together, the conversation slowly shifting from light jokes to something deeper. Neema spoke first. “I think you’re doing the right thing. You needed to step back.” Amina shook her head slightly. “I don’t fully agree.” Cecilia looked at her. “Why?” “Because sometimes,” Amina said, “stepping back too much makes you lose things that matter. Not everything waits forever.” The words felt familiar and uncomfortable. Neema quickly jumped in. “Or maybe what’s meant for her won’t need to be chased or rushed.” Amina crossed her arms. “And maybe she’s overthinking something that should be simple.” Cecilia sighed, rubbing her temples lightly. “You two are not helping.” They all laughed, but the tension underneath was real. Different perspectives. Different truths. And Cecilia… stuck somewhere in the middle. *** That evening, Cecilia decided to do something she hadn’t done in a long time. She went home early, turned off her phone, and sat with her thoughts no distractions, no outside voices. Just her. She stood in front of her mirror again, studying her reflection. “Who are you… without them?” she asked quietly. The question lingered. Not as pressure but as a challenge. For so long, her identity had been tied to love. Being someone’s person. Being chosen. Being needed. But now? She wasn’t sure anymore. And maybe that was okay. *** The next morning, Cecilia woke up with a different kind of energy. Not clarity. But direction. She called Neema first. “Let’s go out today,” she said. Neema sounded surprised. “Out where?” “Anywhere that doesn’t involve talking about my love life.” Neema laughed. “Finally.” *** Later, the three of them Cecilia, Neema, and Amina found themselves exploring parts of the city they hadn’t visited in a while. Small shops, random conversations, laughter that felt free and unforced. At some point, Cecilia realized something important. She was happy. Not because of Wilton. Not because of Rajab. But because she allowed herself to be. As they walked, Amina glanced at her. “You’re smiling a lot today.” Cecilia shrugged lightly. “I forgot I could.” Neema grinned. “See? This is the Cecy we know.” *** But as the day came to an end, reality slowly returned. Feelings don’t disappear in one day. Choices don’t solve themselves overnight. That night, Cecilia turned her phone back on. Messages flooded in. Missed calls. Names she had been trying not to think about. She stared at the screen for a long moment… then locked it again. Not out of fear. But out of control. “I’ll face this,” she whispered. “But not before I’m ready.” *** Cecilia lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her journey wasn’t about choosing between two men anymore. It was becoming something deeper. She was learning balance. Learning to listen. Learning to exist without rushing into decisions just to ease discomfort. And maybe… that was the real growth. Because for the first time, Cecilia wasn’t just reacting to life. She was shaping it. Slowly. Carefully. On her own terms.
