Chapter 3:
The Night Everything Changed:
Elena barely slept that night.
Roman's words kept returning to her, especially the way he'd looked at her on the terrace. She had almost kissed him. Worse, she had wanted him to kiss her.
By morning, she had convinced herself it had been a moment of weakness.
Nothing more.
But when she entered the hotel that evening, Roman was waiting in the lobby. He was dressed in a charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly pushed back, his sleeves buttoned at his wrists. The usual coldness in his grey eyes disappeared the moment he saw her.
"You came."
Elena gave him a small smile. "You asked me to."
"I was starting to think you'd change your mind."
"I almost did."
He stepped closer. "But you didn't."
"No."
For a moment, they simply looked at each other.
Then Roman held out his hand.
"Come with me."
Elena hesitated before placing her hand in his.
His fingers closed gently around hers.
That simple touch sent a strange warmth through her.
They left the hotel through a private entrance, where Roman's car was waiting. The city was alive with lights, traffic, and the soft sound of rain beginning to fall against the pavement.
During the drive, Elena watched the rain sliding down the window.
"Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
"I don't like surprises."
"You'll like this one."
She glanced at him.
"You're very confident."
"I usually am."
She laughed.
"Of course you are."
The restaurant Roman had chosen was on the top floor of a quiet building overlooking the city.
There were only a few tables, soft golden lights, and enormous windows covered with tiny drops of rain. Outside, the city looked almost unreal beneath the stormy sky.
Elena stopped when she saw the view.
"Wow."
Roman watched her instead of the skyline.
"You like it?"
"It's beautiful."
"I knew you would."
Dinner passed more slowly this time.
There was something different between them now.
Something neither was pretending not to feel.
Roman reached across the table and gently touched her fingers.
Elena looked down at their hands.
"Roman..."
"You can pull away."
She didn't.
His thumb moved slowly across her knuckles.
"I don't know what you're doing to me," he admitted.
Elena looked into his eyes.
"I haven't done anything."
"That's the problem."
Her heart beat faster.
He stood and came around the table.
Elena remained seated until he stopped beside her.
"Look at me."
She did.
Roman lowered himself slightly, bringing his face closer to hers.
"If I kiss you, will you regret it?"
Elena swallowed.
"Probably."
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
"Then why aren't you moving away?"
"Because..."
She couldn't finish.
Roman gently lifted her chin.
Their lips met.
The kiss was soft at first, almost hesitant.
Then Elena's hand caught the front of his shirt, and Roman's restraint disappeared.
He kissed her again, deeper this time, his hand settling carefully at her waist.
The rain grew heavier against the windows.
The city lights blurred behind the glass.
For a few seconds, Elena forgot everything.
The hotel.
The difference between them.
The fact that Roman would leave in less than a month.
There was only him.
And the way her heart refused to slow down.
When they finally separated, Elena rested her forehead against his.
"This is a bad idea."
"I know."
"We work at the same hotel."
"I know."
"You're leaving soon."
"I know."
She looked into his eyes.
"Then why?"
Roman's answer was quiet.
"Because tonight, I don't want to think about tomorrow."
They returned to the hotel late.
The rain had turned into a steady downpour.
Roman walked Elena to the elevator.
She pressed the button.
Neither spoke.
When the doors opened, she stepped inside.
Roman followed.
The elevator doors closed.
Elena looked at him.
"Good night."
"That's it?"
She smiled nervously.
"What else should I say?"
Roman stepped closer.
"Tell me you didn't regret it."
She looked down.
"I didn't."
He lifted her chin.
"Good."
The elevator stopped.
Neither of them noticed at first.
Then the lights flickered.
Elena grabbed his arm.
"What's happening?"
"Power failure, probably."
The emergency lights came on, leaving the elevator in a soft red glow.
Roman looked at her.
The tension between them returned instantly.
He touched her cheek.
"Are you scared?"
"Not of the elevator."
His eyes darkened.
"Then what?"
"You."
He smiled.
"You should be."
Elena's heart raced.
The elevator started moving again.
When the doors opened, Roman didn't move.
Neither did Elena.
Finally, she whispered, "I should go."
Roman nodded.
But as she stepped out, he caught her hand.
"Elena."
She turned.
His expression had changed.
"Come upstairs."
She knew what he meant.
Her heart told her to stay.
Her mind told her to leave.
For several seconds, she stood there.
Then she quietly stepped back into the elevator.
Roman's eyes met hers.
And the doors closed.
The next morning, Elena woke before sunrise.
For a few seconds, she didn't remember where she was.
Then she saw Roman asleep beside her.
The room was quiet except for the rain outside.
His usually perfect hair was messy, his face relaxed, and without the suit and cold expression, he looked younger.
Human.
Elena smiled faintly.
She slowly got out of bed and reached for her clothes.
Her phone suddenly vibrated on the bedside table.
She froze.
One missed call.
Then another.
From her mother.
Elena's heart dropped.
She quickly called back.
Her mother's voice answered, shaky and frightened.
"Elena... where are you?"
"I'm at the hotel. What happened?"
There was silence.
Then her mother whispered,
"Someone came looking for you last night."
Elena's face went pale.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Mom, what did they want?"
Her mother hesitated.
"They knew your name."
Elena looked toward the sleeping man behind her.
Then her mother said the words that made her blood run cold.
"And they asked about Roman Sterling."
