He said the last part as if killing a human was no big deal. Just another pitch at a sales meeting. Jiro stopped mid-chew of a large grape.
"So what you telling me is that you want me to find out where the most desirable and most hidden gem in the world is. Then kill the one family in the world that mines it. And lead you back to the diamonds." They nodded their heads in agreement. Mr.Dillard slightly reluctant.
"Your joking. I mean you must be." His eyes crinkling in false laughter. Yet no one laughed with him they stood there looking at him like he had gown three hours from each ear. That when Jiro knew they were serious.
"Ok then not joking." He whispered his face becoming serious. There would be no jokes nor games here.
"I'm sure you know what I charge. But since this is a job that will be on a global scale I'm going to ask for a whole hell of a lot more than normal." The judge was right this could change many things. The one thing it won't change is the greed for this diamond in the world. It was just passing hands it wasn't going to make anything better. Besides that who knows what would happen to him if he got caught. I mean killed for sure he thought but how was the more nagging question.
"We wouldn't have come If we didn't have money to get it done. Half now and Half when the job is done of course." He could agree to that.
"How much?" Dillard asked his phone at the ready.
"20 Million..." Dillard began to punch in numbers onto his phone presumably already wiring half to show Nyx he meant business.
"Per head." Nyx interrupted him. He stopped and looking at him in irriataion. Dallas spoke before he could.
"Mr.Nyx if I may you asking for a lot." Dallas pushed his glasses up as they were sliding to the bridge of his nose.
"So are you." He retired it promptly shut the two men up. Dallas had sat back down his head in his hands. Jiro could tell Dillard was the greedier out of the two. Dallas was probably perfectly happy with the millions they were currently living on.
"You want two of the powerful people on the planet killed and you want their company. Your return on that would be astronomical. Pay it or go simple as that." Dillard finished typing into his phone and Nyx got a ding come from his own. Seeing 20 million wired to his acct he smiled and sat on a barstool in the kitchen much more relaxed than before.
"Now that we got that outta the way, mind telling me just how do you suppose I am going to be under the radar about this?" Mr.Dallas went to the black briefcase that had sat next to him and opened it. He took out a pile of papers and cautiously handed them to Jiro. He quickly took two steps back careful not to offend him. In the stack of papers where floor plans and schedules also any person that had come in and out of the house in the last four months.
"We have an informant already living there as a butler to the Dires. He has comprised all these papers. He knows almost everything about the Dires and routines and everyone they work with."
"What do you need me for then?" He questioned shuffling through the papers.
"He hasn't been able to find out any information about the location of the house or the mine.
"He works there though how does he not know the address of the house?" They both turned to look at each other and hesitated.
"So the Dires have a unique way of getting people to their house. It's all just a part of the process." Before he could ask anything more they spoke up again cutting him off.
" The kid, he won't be able to complete the job. He can't comprehend the whole situation and why it's so important to have a professional do this. We are afraid he would mess up the process and give himself away. So we will put in an application for you for a butler position and they should hire you within a week. That how you get in and what we can do from here. The rest is up to you."
Jiro could do this he hates the Dires. He blames them for all his misfortunes and missgivings. He wouldn't hesitate to kill them. Except this kid Del. His name is on the top of each report. He might be a slight problem, he has put a lot of hard work into this. He might want to do the job himself. They had said he's just a kid, he won't be able to. It takes a long time to train one's mind and heart to not feel anything. To kill without letting it haunt you takes practice. Chances are if he has any kind of feeling for anyone person in the house he will faultier in the end.
"And there's one other thing." Dillard seemed nervous to speak up.
"Well, what else is it?" They all stepped back again remembering whose presence they were in.
"You have to use your real name on the application. We tried to find another way around it but we just don't have all the connections for it. That means they will have access to all your personal files from the time you were born, that is if you're in the system."
"Well, I'm not so it shouldn't be a problem." They sighed in relief. Nyx hated using his real name. He couldn't remember the last time someone called him Jiro. It's the name of a life he was made to forget. But he wanted this job and at this point would do anything to be the one to wrap his hands around their throats and kill them.
"Fine. Now when do I start?" I asked eager to begin my new job.
"We will send in the application for you and they should hire you within the week. Now, remember Nyx you will be in that house for a very long time. It could be 4 months to a year at the very least. Things like this take time." He warned wanting to make sure I really wanted to do this.
"I don't have anything better to do with my time." I joked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The suns dawn caused her eyes to flicker open. A silent breeze swept through the open window and gauzy curtains did their morning sway as she rose from the bed. The silk sheets felt like heaven on her skin and there was a faint scent of lavender still hanging in the air from her candle last night. Yet as she looked to the other half of the king-sized bed she found it empty.
Alone......again. What else is new?
Will had said he'd be back as soon as possible. That could mean another week or so that Zaina would be sleeping with no one by her side. She knew this would happen, She knew he would have to be gone often, but still, she hated feeling so lost in my own home......so empty. She didn't remember vowing to sleep alone most nights when they got married.
Even when Will was here he’s wrapped up and consumed by my conceiving. It’s as if he doesn't even see me anymore, he only sees a childbearing body. Zaina had problems conceiving and constantly wondered if her husband even loved her anymore. If he regretted marrying her.
She let out a depressed sigh and headed over to do my morning routine. Maybe she couldn't give will the family he wanted but she will work hard for this company. Shower, teeth, hair, makeup, stiff as hell clothes, and tall black stilettos. She had to presentable and set a good example for everyone else. She wanted everyone to see her as an upstanding businesswoman and wife. She couldn't let that identity falter. As she questioned the way locks fell in the mirror she heard a slight knock come from the bedrooms double doors.
"Yes Suzy come in." It could only ever be Suzy. Will never knocks and the rest of the staff are to frightened to ever approach her let alone knock on her bedroom door. That hadn't bothered her though. She prefers they didn't disturb her when she was here. It felt like it was the only time she could just breathe Besides they should be afraid of her. She refused anything but the best for the household and the business.
The petite girl came quietly and stood in the middle of the room waiting for direction. She remembered when she picked her up from the street ratted and torn clothes. A mess of hair and hardly any meat on her bones. She had beautiful chestnut hair and the face of an angel. Zaina had seen how the younger male staff looked at her especially Randel. That kid was gonna be the death of her she was sure she didn't trust him around Suzy.
Suzy would be nineteen soon. That means she would start thinking of marriage. It was common now for girls to marry right outta high school and in general in their early twenties. families couldn't typically afford to support their children after high school so for a lot of girls this was their only option. Zaina was happy she found Suzy when she did now she could take her time instead of rushing. Suzy would have no problem picking a gentleman, they would line up outside of the house to meet her. She did worry though, Suzy was as naive as they come. Zaina had seen how the younger male staff looked at her especially Randel. That kid was gonna be the death of her she was sure she didn't trust him around Suzy.
"Good morning Suzy." Coming out of the bathroom Zaina smiled at her.
"Good morning Mrs.Dire. What would like for breakfast today?" Again with this ‘Mrs.Dire’ thing. No matter how many times she told her she could call her Zaina she still continued to be formal.
Giving her a frustrated look Zainas stomach growled in anticipation unexpectedly. The thought hadn't even occurred to her till now but she had not eaten since yesterday's lunch. She noticed as Suzy looked at her stomach. She had to say something though she didn't really feel hungry. Zaina knew if she didn't eat Suzy would tell WIll and then it'd become a much bigger thing than it needed to be. She knew Suzy meant no harm and was only worried but sometimes she would just wish everyone would stop worrying about her. She was a big girl and could take care of herself.
"Just eggs benedict and a pot of lavender tea please." Just because she was a rich and powerful women didn't mean she needed to be rude. Saying please was basic manners. Speaking of manners she remembered she had anther thing to deal with by the days end besides all the paperwork.
"And Suzy bring me Randel. I need to speak with him. I'll be in my usual office. Don’t alarm him. It will just be a friendly chat." In truth, she was ready to ring that boys neck.
"Yes ma'am" Suzy left a smile on her face closing the door with just a click. A mere moment later she left with her phone a long to-do list splashed on its screen. She walked the hallowed halls of the open mansion. The click of her heels echoing throughout the mansion. Marble columns and pastel blue walls surrounded her. Family portraits from Will's side of the family hung on the walls alongside beautiful paintings. No pictures from Zainas family sat there. Only photos of their wedding and even those were scarce.
There were windows everywhere looking out to the marvelous willow tree forest that surrounded us. It was breathtaking every time she glanced upon it. With the breeze out and about this early in the morning the dreary branches of the trees danced in waves together. Though she had little time to marvel at its beauty. Her eyes were glued to her phone. Job applicants and issues regarding the company employees. Not to mention the endless list of referrals and raise applicants.
Just one day without paperwork. Lord why can't I have just one day? Sometimes she wished Will had never taken over the company she wondered where they would be if he followed a different path. Of course, though the choice was never hers and she had met him too late after anyway.
Descending the grand staircase she heard the small clatter in the kitchen. Sizzling and the wonderful smell of beautifully cooked eggs filled the air. Her breakfast no doubt. When her heels sounded against the black marble floors. The clatter stopped and she was the only sound at the time that echoed through the large hallway. She hadn't known when it happened. Whenever the staff heard her coming they stopped all movement and became silent. Its been like that for over a year this point.
Finally reaching her office at the end of the hall she sighed and sat behind her desk. All the windows were open letting the breeze blow to and fro. The willow trees outside traveled with the wind, wouldn't life be simpler if she had just been a tree she thought.
She never thought in all my days of living she would be jealous of a damn tree. She chuckled a little and returned to oversee the paperwork for the day. A light-handed knock came from the other side of the door.
"Come in" The click of the door opening didn't draw her attention. Not even the heavy footsteps that came after Suzys own, for she already knew who was in my presence. The slow lagged pace though had her agitated already. He just could be bothered to do anything that made him seem professional. The sound of small wheels as approached the side of the desk a small plate was placed down alongside a cup of dark blue tea in my favorite cup.
"Mrs.Dire we are all out of lavender but I know you like blueberry so I got that instead."
"I've brought Del as well, Mrs.Dire. Is there anything else you need?"
"Randel sit. No that'll be all thank you" My hunger was finally starting to appear beside the growling of my stomach.
"Yes Mrs.Dire." As soon as little Suzy left Zaina brought her head up to be welcomed by the insect scowl that Randel always gave her. It was never quite clear to her why he hated her with such a passion. Of course he never said so but you could see it in his eyes. How when he would talk to any of the employees or even her own husband his dark green eyes would sparkle with interest and he would seem so gentle. But when it came to her, that endearing gaze turned to a black so deep you'd think he held an abyss in his eyes.
"You called for me Mrs.Dire?" He sat his legs open in a wide stance and folding his arms like a child would. He gave her a sigh that made her roll her eyes so hard she thought they would get stuck in the back of her head.
"Yes I did, your papers of confidentiality have not reached me yet. You need to understand that if I don't have those papers I will fire you." Zaina spoke sternly to him. They hadn't much of an age gap about six years. But it was enough that Randel saw them on the same level. Zaina constantly had to remind him who was in charge.
"I'll get them to you when I get them to you." He stated only annoying her more.
"I'm only allowing this leniency because my husband wouldn't want to see you thrown out." He only furrowed his brow deeper and if looks could kill she'd be dead already. Zaina refused to seem fazed by it. She was the boss not this child. She has the world in my hands not this child. She shouldn't be afraid of anyone......but Randel did shake her confidence.
"You wouldn't fire me." He scoffed and smirked with arrogance.
"I will do what I have to in order to protect this company. You know as well as I do, I don’t trust you, and I sure as hell don't want you here." They always say honesty is the best policy. He knew she meant business she always did. He remained silent the whole time like her words had no real worth to him.
“Mr.Dire wants me here so you can't do a damn thing about it.” His smug attitude was disgusting to her. For an employee to speak such a way to her.
"It's simple get me those papers or you're done for. Dead or alive you will leave this building if those papers don't are not on my desk by tomorrow." She watched as he got up from the chair in a huff and walked to the door
"Oh and Randel..."She started looking back at her paperwork.
"You're not the first stray my husband had brought home and I can assure you, you won't be the last. He wouldn't bat an eye if you were gone tomorrow. You're not as special as you think." She couldn't help but smirk. His face was so angry as he looked at her. Seething rage just waiting to come out. She lowered her glasses to the rim bridge of her nose.
"Your dismissed."
