Chapter 8

1083 Words
The moment Sabrina stepped out of the office, she found Harold waiting outside, like he had been there the whole time. The agreement from earlier was already in his hand. “Sign it,” he ordered coldly. “Vector needs you to handle our Russian clients. You know I didn't give you a choice. He's waiting for you.” The surrounding employees slowed to watch, sensing another confrontation. Sabrina took the document, glanced at it once, then ripped it cleanly in half. The sound of tearing paper echoed through the corridor. “I'd rather walk away with nothing than spend another day being your puppet.” Her voice was sharp enough to turn heads three offices away, still locking eyes with him. Harold's jaw tightened. “What has come over you? You better not make a mistake you'll live to regret.” “Respectfully, f**k you, and this insult dressed in paperwork, dad.” Harold was taken aback by her sudden rage and audacity. Where did his submissive and obedient stepdaughter go, because this version is one he is unfamiliar with? “And remember this, Harold—one day, I'll use you as you used me. I'll use you until there's nothing left in you. I'm going to remind you of this exact moment when I slap you with every cent I'm going to take from you.” Without another word, she returned to her office, packed the few things that still belonged to her, and walked out of the company with her head held high. Outside, a sleek luxury sedan was parked in front of her. The driver was standing beside it, his eyes glued on her with respect, "Good evening, Miss Smith.” Her phone vibrated. [The driver is at your service. He'll take you anywhere you wish - Miller] The sight of the expensive car waiting exclusively for Sabrina instantly ignited whispers throughout the company. Curious eyes followed her as she stepped inside, leaving everyone wondering who had suddenly become her mysterious backer, considering the way her conversation with her father went. That night, after collapsing onto her bed from exhaustion, Sabrina stared at Miller's proposal for a long time. Today has been one hell of a roller-coaster for her. One moment she was grieving her past relationship. Her position was revoked. The next moment, Clara's health issues. Everything was incredibly overwhelming, and since this feels like the best option to escape all these, she might as well just agree and rest her head. Before going to bed, she grabbed her phone and, after much contemplation, she sent a direct message to Miller. [I accept.] The following morning, another text arrived with the address of the marriage registry. Before she could process it, a knock came at her door. Standing outside was a graceful woman carrying several elegant garment bags. "Good morning, Miss Sabrina," she said with a respectful smile. "Mr. Guidotti sent me to prepare you for your wedding." A few hours later, Sabrina stepped out in a simple but breathtaking bridal attire and quietly made her way to the courthouse. The moment she stepped in and her eyes locked in with Miller, her heart skipped a bit. He stood tall and commanding in his long-tailored black blazer. He looked effortlessly charming, turning heads and stealing breath, but his eyes were on one person… Sabrina—a vision of masculine grace, handsome enough to make time itself pause in reverence. He leaned forward and whispered, “You look very beautiful.” Sabrina bit her lower lip and was about to talk when the clerk took his seat. “Shall we?” He said, placing the necessary documents on his desk. Miller nodded calmly, but Sabrina’s heart started racing. She was here now, and even though it seemed like there'd be no going back, she felt like a trapped bird. What if the clerk notices? The thought made her slightly uneasy. What if it says right there on the document that she’s still… She couldn’t even finish the thought. She didn’t want to imagine how the situation would turn out with Finn. She slowly brushed away the beads of sweat tracing down her jaw, her fingers trembling. She had been contemplating whether it would be wise to tell Miller about their trip to Imani and the process it took. But that would mean they'd have to let Finn know in order to get his signature, but if Finn discovered their marriage had never been dissolved, his desperation would turn vicious. He would weaponize it, refusing to sign the papers just to keep her trapped — especially from marrying Miller. No... She can't... Not when this contract was her only option to crawl out of the cage her ex and father placed her in. This marriage isn't real to begin with. Just paperwork in exchange for Clara's life. It's just going to be a beautiful illusion with Miller. After all, he warned her not to fall for him, to simply play the part of his wife. All they had to do was fill out the form, pay the money, and get a picture taken. When they were done filling out the form, and it was time to sign, Sabrina was still in a daze. “Miss Sabrina?” Miller had already signed, and the clerk called her as she seemed lost or uncertain. He wasn't sure which one. Sabrina looked at the old man. In a bit of a panic. With the pen in her hand, she held it even more tightly, all the confused thoughts in her head were reflected on her face, her brown eyes filled with hesitation. She took a deep breath and forced a smile. After a lifetime of being used, it wouldn't hurt to be selfish just for once, would it? Her silence isn’t malicious. It is self-preservation and survival. “Miss Sabrina, is this marriage voluntary? If you're having second thoughts, we don't have to proceed,” the old man said, his eyes suspiciously glaring at her. He looked at Miller, then back at Sabrina like he was certain something was wrong. Suddenly, her phone rings, cutting through the tension. Miller saw the caller ID was boldly written, ‘Finn’. The moment she tried to reach for her phone, Sabrina was held by a man’s big hand. Then she was brought close into his arms. He hugged her waist with one hand, his eyes narrowed, and her soft lips were stamped with his thick lips.
