The screeching voice of my foster mother ripped through the walls. I didn't flinch, instead, I heaved a long, exasperated sigh, my eyes rolling in the cracked mirror before me. My reflection stared back at me, I had a boyish haircut framing a face I'd spent the last year trying to disguise. It was a constant losing battle against the soft curve of my cheekbones, the slight fullness of my lips, and, worst of all, my eyes. They were the most feminine part of me, huge and a startling shade of green that my foster mother often said glowed like an emerald. Another yell came through, closer this time. "Are you deaf, girl? I said now!" I dragged my feet from the small, cramped room, stepping into the main living space where she stood, hands on her wide hips, her face already filled with fury. H
