Chapter Five — Into Moonclaw Woods

523 Words
The woods loomed ahead like a wall of shadows. Trees twisted toward the sky, branches woven so thick that moonlight struggled to break through. Elyria inhaled. The air was sharp with the scent of pine… and something musky, wild, electric. “Stay close,” Raven murmured. “I’m not helpless.” “Never said you were. But werewolves have ways of testing outsiders.” They stepped into the forest. Instantly, Elyria felt it—an energy humming beneath the ground, through the trees, in her bones. The forest was alive. And watching. Crunch. Elyria froze. “Did you hear that?” “Yes,” Raven whispered. His fangs slid out subtly. “We’re being surrounded.” A low growl rolled through the trees. Then another. And another. Glowing eyes emerged from the darkness, one pair… then three… then ten. Wolves stepped into view—massive, fur bristling, muscles coiled. They circled Elyria and Raven with military precision. Raven stepped in front of her, snarling. “Careful,” Elyria whispered. “You’ll start a fight.” “That’s kind of the point,” he muttered. A wolf larger than the rest padded forward. Midnight black fur. Silver eyes. Power radiated from him like heat. He shifted. Bones cracked, fur receded, and a tall young man stood in his place—shirtless, tattooed, scars crossing his chest like battle stories. The Alpha. He locked eyes with Elyria. “You are the hybrid girl,” he said, voice deep and rough. “The one in the prophecy.” Elyria swallowed hard. “I guess that depends on which prophecy you mean.” A few wolves chuckled. The Alpha didn’t. “You carry the scent of magic and blood,” he said. “And something else… something ancient.” Raven moved protectively. “Back off, wolf,” he warned. The Alpha growled softly. “You are bold for a rogue.” “Bold enough.” Elyria stepped between them. “Stop. I’m not here to fight.” The Alpha’s gaze softened—just a fraction. “You seek your twin. The Shadow-Taken.” Elyria’s heart dropped. “You know about her?” “Yes,” he said. “But before we help you…” He nodded to the wolves around her. “You must pass our trial.” Raven groaned. “I knew it.” Elyria lifted her chin. “Fine. What trial?” The Alpha smiled. It wasn’t comforting. “In Moonclaw territory,” he said, “we test strength, heart, and truth.” He pointed to the darkest part of the forest. “And the truth hides in the Grave-Cursed Hollow.” Raven stiffened. “Absolutely not. That place is crawling with—” “Zombies,” the Alpha finished. Elyria exhaled shakily. Zombies. Wonderful. But she refused to back down. “If the trial gets me closer to my sister,” she said, “I’ll face whatever’s in that Hollow.” The wolves howled in approval. Raven rubbed his face. “This is a terrible idea.” Elyria smiled grimly. “Probably.” But she stepped forward anyway. And the forest swallowed her whole.
