Chapter 16 — The Coven Strikes Back

588 Words
The light of Elyria and Selene’s combined magic faded slowly, leaving the twins breathing hard in the darkened corridor. Their hearts still raced, their powers thrumming with energy. For a brief moment, they allowed themselves to feel victory. Then the air shifted. A chill, unnatural and sharp, swept through the labyrinth. The runes lining the walls blazed crimson, pulsing with a dark rhythm that made the twins’ skin crawl. “The Coven knows we’re here,” Selene said, her voice tense. “And they’re not going to let us leave alive.” Raven’s amber eyes glowed in the dim light. “They’re sending reinforcements. Dozens, maybe hundreds. Shadows, undead… things you don’t even want to know exist.” Before Elyria could respond, a sound echoed through the hall: chanting, low and sinister, rising from deep within the fortress. Figures emerged from the shadows—Coven enforcers, draped in black robes, their eyes glowing red, their weapons infused with dark magic. “Elyria… Selene,” a chilling voice whispered. “You should not have come.” The Shadow King stepped forward from behind the enforcers, his presence dominating the corridor. “You may have escaped my initial wards,” he said, his voice smooth and cold. “But your power is mine to claim.” Elyria and Selene exchanged a glance. Together. That single word carried more strength than anything the Coven could muster. Selene moved first, shadows spiraling around her, forming blades of pure darkness. Elyria followed, flames of blue fire igniting along her arms, mingling with Selene’s shadows in a dazzling display of raw power. The enforcers lunged, weapons raised. The twins’ combined attack shredded the first wave, their magic synchronized as if instinctively. Every strike of fire met a shadow, every s***h of shadow amplified by Elyria’s energy. But the Shadow King did not move among them. He watched, calculating, letting his minions fall while he studied the twins. “You are strong,” he said finally. “Stronger than I anticipated.” “Too late to stop us,” Elyria spat back. The Shadow King’s eyes narrowed. “Then let us see just how far your bond can carry you.” He slammed his palms to the floor. The labyrinth shook violently. Stone cracked and shattered, sending debris flying. Runes along the walls erupted with black fire, scorching the twins’ protective wards. Selene grabbed Elyria’s hand. “We have to push back together, now!” They combined their powers once again—fire and shadow, vampire blood magic and witch energy. The blast surged outward, colliding with the Shadow King’s attack. The force split the corridor in half, leaving a ringing silence in its wake. When the echoes faded, the enforcers were gone, the walls scorched, and the Shadow King had retreated—vanishing into the deeper shadows of the fortress. Selene looked at Elyria, determination burning in her eyes. “He’s not done. He’ll come back, stronger.” Elyria clenched her fists, blue fire flickering along her arms. “Then we’ll be ready. Together.” Raven placed a hand on her shoulder. “We need to move deeper. The source of the Coven’s power—and the place where they’re holding Selene’s captives—is ahead. That’s where this ends, one way or another.” The twins nodded, their bond stronger than ever. With each step deeper into the fortress, the pulse of magic from the black medallion grew hotter—leading them onward, toward the heart of the Coven, toward their final confrontation.
