The panic room had no windows.
Luna sat on the king-size bed and stared at the steel door. It was 3 inches thick. Damian’s voice came through the speaker.
“You’re safe in there. Security is on your mom 24/7.”
“Let me out,” Luna said. “I feel like a prisoner.”
“You are a prisoner,” he said bluntly. “But you’re my prisoner. And I keep what’s mine alive.”
The speaker clicked off.
Luna wanted to scream. Instead she lay down and stared at the ceiling.
She’d been in here 2 days. Food brought in. Books brought in. Damian hadn’t come once.
Until tonight.
The door opened. Damian walked in. No tie. Hair messy. He looked exhausted.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
Luna sat up. “I’m fine. Is my mom okay?”
“Stable. The guard outside her door hasn’t left.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Victoria’s behind the texts. We traced it.”
Luna’s stomach dropped. “What are you going to do?”
“Nothing. Yet.” His gray eyes met hers. “If I move too fast, she’ll go after you directly. I need her to think you’re weak.”
“I’m not weak.”
“I know.” He crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. Too close. “That’s why this is hard.”
“What’s hard?”
“Watching you and not touching you.” The words came out rough. “Watching you in that dress and pretending you don’t make me lose my mind.”
Luna’s breath caught. “Don’t.”
“Why? Because it’s a contract?” He laughed bitterly. “The contract says I can have your bed if I want it, Luna. Remember?”
She remembered. Every word.
Damian leaned in. His hand came up and cupped her face. His thumb brushed her cheekbone.
“Say no,” he whispered. “Say no and I’ll stop.”
Luna should have. God she should have.
Instead she closed her eyes and leaned into his touch.
Damian cursed softly and kissed her.
It wasn’t gentle. It was angry and desperate and 2 months of pretending they didn’t want each other. His hands were in her hair. Hers were fisted in his shirt.
When they broke apart, both of them were breathing hard.
“This was a mistake,” Luna whispered.
“Yeah,” Damian agreed. But he didn’t move away. “Biggest mistake of my life.”
Then his phone rang.
He answered. Listened. And every bit of warmth left his face.
“What?”
Luna’s heart sank.
Damian hung up and stood. “Victoria’s at the hospital. With reporters. She’s claiming I’m holding a human hostage and forcing her to carry my baby.”
Luna shot to her feet. “What? That’s a lie!”
“I know.” He was already at the door. “Stay here. Don’t leave.”
“Damian—”
The door closed.
Luna was alone again.
---
An hour later the TV in the panic room was showing the news.
Victoria, crying to cameras. “I loved him. I was going to be his Luna. And now he’s throwing it all away for some gold-digging human.”
The headline: **ALPHA BLACKWOOD’S SECRET PREGNANCY SCANDAL**
Luna’s phone buzzed.
**Unknown: You see what you did? You ruined him. The pack will never accept you. Run before they kill you and the bastard.**
Luna threw the phone across the room.
The door opened. Damian walked in. He looked furious.
“We’re leaving,” he said. “Pack meeting. Now. You’re coming with me.”
“What? No, I can’t—”
“You can.” He grabbed her hand. “Because if I don’t show them you’re not a hostage, they’ll believe her. And if they believe her, they’ll take the baby from you when it’s born.”
Luna nodded, terrified.
As they walked through the mansion, past the guards, past the staff who wouldn’t meet her eyes, Luna realized something.
She wasn’t just fighting for the baby anymore.
She was fighting for him.
And she had no idea if that made her strong... or stupid.
