Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

1105 Words
The gates alarms went off at 3:17am. Luna shot up in bed. Hand on her belly. *BOOM* Another hit. Damian was already in her room. No knock. No permission. Eyes wild. Shirt half-buttoned. Gun in his hand. “Stay down,” he said. “Don’t make a sound.” “What’s happening?” Luna whispered. “My father,” Damian said. “And your father.” Luna’s blood went cold. --- Downstairs, 200 North Pack wolves stood in formation. Across the gate, 50 cars. Headlights like a war zone. Victor Blackwood stepped out first. Damian’s father. Alpha of the South Pack. The man who taught Damian how to be ruthless. And next to him... “Luna!” Her father. Drunk. Bloody. With two men holding his arms. “Luna baby, tell them to let me in!” he slurred. “I’m your dad!” Damian walked to the front line. Didn’t look at Luna once. “State your business, Victor,” Damian said. Voice like ice. Victor smiled. “I’m here for my granddaughter. And the $90,000 you owe me for the delivery.” Gasps from the pack. Luna stumbled. “Delivery?” Victor pointed at her. “You think this was love? This was a contract, girl. Your daddy sold you to pay his debts. And now the baby’s almost here. Time to pay up.” Luna looked at Damian. “Is that true?” Damian didn’t blink. “No.” “Then what is it?” Luna screamed. Damian stepped forward. “It was a contract. 6 months ago. Before I met you.” He turned to face her. Right there. In front of both packs. “But the moment I saw you in that bar, the contract burned. The moment I felt her kick, the deal was dead.” Victor laughed. “Sentimental. That’s why you’re weak.” He pulled out papers. “This says the baby belongs to me until payment is made. And payment wasn’t made.” Damian pulled out his own papers. “This says I paid $90,000. And $200,000 more for her mother’s medical care. And that Luna and the child are under North Pack protection. Effective immediately.” Victor’s smile dropped. “You think money matters? I have 50 men.” “I have 200,” Damian said. “And I have something you don’t.” He looked at Luna. “I have a reason to fight.” --- That’s when the first shot rang out. Chaos. Wolves shifted. Glass shattered. Alarms screamed. “GET DOWN!” Damian roared. He grabbed Luna and threw them both behind an SUV. Luna was shaking. “My mom—” “She’s safe. In the panic room. Guards are with her.” Damian was checking Luna for injuries. Hands everywhere. “Are you hit? Is the baby okay?” Luna nodded, crying. “We’re okay. We’re okay.” Damian kissed her forehead. Hard. “Stay here.” He stood up. Shifted. The Alpha wolf. 7 feet tall. Black fur. Eyes red. And he ran into the fight. Luna watched from the ground as Damian tore through Victor’s men. But it wasn’t just about winning. Damian was looking for one person. Her father. He found him cowering behind a car. “YOU SOLD HER,” Damian snarled. Her father raised his hands. “I was desperate! The debts—” Damian grabbed him by the throat. Lifted him. “You don’t get to call her yours anymore,” Damian said quietly. Too quiet. “You don’t get to call her anything.” He dropped him. Two guards dragged her father away. --- It was over in 20 minutes. Victor was on his knees, bleeding. 10 of his men dead. The rest ran. Damian walked back to Luna. Shifted back. Human. Covered in blood that wasn’t his. He knelt in front of her. Took her face in his bloody hands. “I’m sorry you saw that,” he said. “I’m sorry your father—” Luna slapped him. Hard. “How long were you going to lie to me?” she screamed. “Was tonight staged too? Was the ultrasound?” Damian didn’t flinch. “No. None of it.” He pulled the ultrasound photo from his pocket. Blood smeared on the corner. “This is real. You’re real. She’s real.” Luna looked at the photo. Her daughter. 12 weeks. Heartbeat 162. “I don’t know what’s real anymore,” Luna whispered. Damian stood. Offered his hand. “Then let me prove it to you. Every day. For the rest of our lives.” Luna stared at his hand. Bloody. Shaking. She didn’t take it. She stood up on her own. “I need to see my mom,” she said. Damian nodded. “I’ll take you.” --- In the panic room, Luna’s mom was fine. Terrified, but fine. When she saw Luna, she pulled her into a hug. “Baby. My baby.” Luna broke. “He knew, Mom. 6 months ago. He planned it.” Her mom looked at Damian in the doorway. “Did you love her before the contract?” her mom asked him. Damian met her eyes. “No.” Then he looked at Luna. “Do I love her now? More than my own life.” Her mom was quiet for a long time. Then she nodded. “Then you fight for her.” Luna couldn’t look at either of them. She walked to the window. Dawn was breaking. The yard was a mess. Damian came to stand behind her. Not touching. “I’m not asking you to forgive me today,” he said. “I’m asking you to let me earn it.” Luna touched her belly. Her daughter kicked. “What if I can’t?” Luna asked. “Then I’ll wait,” Damian said. “Until you can. Or until you don’t want me to anymore.” Luna closed her eyes. Outside, the pack was cleaning up. Inside, her world was shattered. But her daughter was still kicking. --- That night, Luna moved to the guest wing. Damian didn’t follow. He sent one thing: The nursery. Fully done. Crib. Rocking chair. Pink and gray. A mobile with stars. And on the dresser: The ultrasound photo. In a frame. With a note: **"For our daughter. Whenever you’re ready. - D"** Luna picked up the frame. Cried until she couldn’t breathe. Her daughter kicked again. Luna whispered, “What do we do, baby?” The baby didn’t answer. But Luna already knew. She couldn’t run. She couldn’t hate him. And she couldn’t forget.
