Chapter 12: The Morning Light

When Maya slowly fluttered her eyes open the next morning, the first thing she registered was the sheer, unbelievable softness of the mattress beneath her. The second thing was the golden, buttery sunlight spilling across the heavy oak floors through the slightly parted blackout curtains. She stretched like a contented cat, a soft sigh escaping her lips as her toes grazed the cool, high-thread-count cotton sheets. For the first time in what felt like a decade, she had slept through the entire night without a single restless dream, without tossing and turning, and without the heavy, crushing anxiety of her daily responsibilities pressing down on her chest. She turned her head, realizing she was alone in the massive, king-sized bed. The space beside her was empty, but the pillow still carried the faint, intoxicating scent of Julian’s expensive cedarwood and bergamot cologne. A small, genuine smile touched her lips. Last night had been magic. After they had fallen asleep by the fire, Julian had gently carried her upstairs to the master bedroom, tucking her in with a level of tenderness she had never experienced in her life. He hadn't pushed for anything more; he had simply held her until she drifted into a deep, peaceful slumber. Maya sat up, pulling the thick duvet around her shoulders. On the nightstand, beside a glass of fresh water, rested a small, handwritten note on thick parchment paper. The handwriting was bold and elegant, just like the man himself. *“Didn't want to wake you. You looked too peaceful. Come down to the kitchen when you're ready. - J”* Her heart did a familiar, happy flutter. She slid out of bed, her bare feet padding softly against the warm wood floor. Since she hadn't bothered to fully unpack her overnight bag last night, she simply grabbed one of Julian’s discarded dress shirts from a nearby armchair. It was a crisp, white button-down that swallowed her petite frame entirely, the hem reaching halfway down her thighs. She rolled the sleeves up to her elbows, ran a hand through her messy cascade of dark curls, and headed downstairs. As she descended the grand, sweeping staircase, a heavenly aroma began to tickle her senses. The rich, earthy smell of freshly brewed dark roast coffee mixed with the sweet, buttery scent of pancakes cooking on a griddle. Maya followed the scent down the wide hallway and pushed open the swinging door to the kitchen. She stopped in her tracks, leaning against the doorframe just to take the scene in. The kitchen was a massive, rustic masterpiece with exposed wooden beams, a giant marble island, and copper pots hanging from the ceiling. But the most breathtaking part of the room was the man standing at the stove. Julian was dressed in a pair of soft gray sweatpants that hung low on his narrow hips and a fitted black t-shirt that stretched across his broad back as he moved. His dark, usually perfectly styled hair was beautifully rumpled, as if he had been running his hands through it all morning. He was casually flipping a pancake with a spatula in one hand, holding a steaming mug of coffee in the other, humming softly to a jazz tune playing quietly from a wireless speaker. The ruthless, untouchable billionaire who struck fear into the hearts of board members across the globe was standing in his kitchen, making her breakfast. Maya felt a sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion lodge itself in her throat. It was such a domestic, intimately normal scene, yet to her, it was the most extraordinary thing she had ever witnessed. Julian turned slightly to reach for a plate and caught sight of her standing in the doorway. He froze for a fraction of a second. His dark eyes slowly swept over her, taking in his oversized white shirt draped over her small body, her bare legs, and the soft, sleep-tousled look on her face. A slow, devastatingly handsome smile spread across his face, lighting up his eyes. "Good morning," Julian murmured, setting his coffee mug down and turning the stove off. His voice was thick and slightly raspy from sleep. "Good morning," Maya replied, her voice soft as she walked toward him. Julian didn't wait for her to close the distance. He crossed the kitchen in two long strides, wrapping his strong arms securely around her waist and pulling her flush against his solid body. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, sweet kiss to her forehead, then to the tip of her nose, and finally capturing her lips in a soft, slow greeting. Maya melted against him, her hands coming up to rest on his broad chest, feeling the steady thumping of his heart beneath the soft cotton of his shirt. "You look incredibly beautiful in my clothes," Julian whispered against her lips, his hands rubbing soothing circles on her lower back. "Did you sleep well?" "I slept perfectly," Maya smiled, looking up at him, her brown eyes shining with pure affection. "I can't remember the last time I slept so deeply. The quiet out here is amazing." "I'm glad," Julian said, his eyes softening. He gently tucked a stray curl behind her ear. "You deserve rest, Maya. More than anyone I know." He stepped back slightly, gesturing toward the counter. "I made breakfast. Or, rather, I attempted to. I’m not a professional chef, but I make a highly respectable blueberry pancake." Maya laughed, a bright, melodic sound that filled the kitchen. "I’m starving, and it smells amazing." Julian pulled out a high stool for her at the kitchen island before serving her a plate of perfectly golden pancakes, a side of fresh fruit, and a steaming mug of coffee prepared exactly the way she liked it—two sugars, a splash of cream. He poured himself another cup of black coffee and leaned against the counter opposite her, simply watching her eat with a look of utter contentment. "So," Julian began casually, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "I was thinking about the conservatory this morning." Maya paused, a forkful of pancake halfway to her mouth. "What about it?" "I know your flower shop in the city is your pride and joy, and I would never ask you to change that," Julian said carefully, his tone respectful and serious. "But that greenhouse is massive. If you want, we can set up a climate-controlled transportation system. You can grow your rare, exotic, and high-maintenance blooms here in the country where there is no pollution and plenty of space, and have them safely transported to your shop in the city whenever you need them for your arrangements." Maya lowered her fork, staring at him in stunned silence. She had been thinking the exact same thing last night but hadn't wanted to ask. Logistics like that were expensive and complicated. Yet here he was, anticipating her needs and offering practical, brilliant solutions to help her business thrive. "Julian..." Maya breathed, her eyes widening. "Do you have any idea how much of an advantage that would give my shop? Sourcing exotic flowers is the most expensive part of my overhead. If I can grow them myself... it would completely change my profit margins." "Then we will make it happen," Julian said simply, as if he were discussing the weather. He wasn't trying to take over her business; he was giving her the tools to conquer her industry on her own terms. "I’ll have my logistics team look into customized, temperature-controlled vans tomorrow morning." Maya felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time she didn't wipe it away. She stood up from her stool, walked around the kitchen island, and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. Julian immediately set his coffee down and caught her, pulling her onto his lap as he sat on the adjacent stool. He held her close, burying his face in her neck, inhaling her sweet, natural scent. "Thank you," Maya whispered fiercely into his ear. "Not just for the conservatory, or the vans. Thank you for seeing me. For actually *seeing* me." Julian pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his expression fiercely protective and overwhelmingly tender. "I will always see you, Maya," he promised, his voice a deep, vibrating vow in the quiet morning air. "Always."
