Chapter 15: In Full Bloom

1357 Words
Two weeks later, *Petals & Dreams* was operating at a level Maya had previously only dared to imagine. The new climate-controlled van had been an absolute game-changer, but Julian hadn't stopped there. True to his word about keeping her busy, he had entrusted Maya with the most significant contract of her career: providing all the floral arrangements for the annual Sterling Enterprises Charity Gala. It was the social event of the season, hosted at the prestigious Waldorf Astoria hotel. The guest list included city officials, global investors, and New York’s elite. Usually, Julian’s team hired massive, corporate event planners for such tasks, but Julian had personally handed the floral design portfolio to Maya. It wasn't an act of charity; he had insisted on paying her full corporate rates, telling her it was a sound business investment because her talent was unmatched. By three o'clock on the afternoon of the gala, the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria had been completely transformed. Maya stood in the center of the massive room, her hands resting on her hips as she surveyed her work. It looked like a scene pulled straight from a fairy tale. Fifty round tables were draped in deep navy velvet, each adorned with towering, crystal vases overflowing with cascading white orchids, delicate blue hydrangeas, and lush silver dollar eucalyptus. The perimeter of the room was lined with woven arches of fresh jasmine, filling the massive ballroom with a sweet, intoxicating fragrance. "I think I’m going to cry," Sarah announced, walking up to stand beside Maya. She was holding an empty bucket, her hair sticking out in wild directions, but she looked utterly triumphant. "Maya, look at this place. We did this. Just the two of us." Maya smiled, wrapping an arm around her best friend’s shoulders, pulling her into a tight side-hug. "We did," she agreed, her chest swelling with profound pride. "And we nailed it." "You certainly did," a deep, smooth voice echoed from the grand entrance of the ballroom. Maya turned to see Julian walking toward them. Even amidst the chaos of event preparations, he looked impeccably sharp in a charcoal gray suit, though he had forgone his tie, leaving the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt undone. His dark eyes scanned the breathtaking floral arrangements before finally settling on Maya, his expression softening into pure admiration. "Julian," Maya breathed, her face lighting up. She met him halfway, completely ignoring the fact that she was wearing her dirty canvas apron and had a smudge of pollen on her chin. Julian pulled her into his arms, leaning down to press a deep, lingering kiss to her lips. "This is spectacular, Maya," he murmured against her mouth, stepping back just enough to look at the room again. "I knew you were incredibly talented, but this... this has completely exceeded my expectations. The board members are going to lose their minds." "Thank you," Maya beamed, her heart soaring. "I wanted it to be perfect for you." "It is," Julian promised, his thumb gently wiping the smudge of pollen from her chin. "But now, the work is done. My driver is outside waiting to take Sarah home to rest, and we need to head up to the penthouse. The gala starts in four hours, and I want you to have plenty of time to relax before the madness begins." A few hours later, the atmosphere had completely shifted from frantic preparation to pure, electric anticipation. Maya stood perfectly still in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in Julian’s master bedroom. The dress he had arranged for her was, without a doubt, the most exquisite piece of clothing she had ever touched. It was a floor-length gown made of soft, midnight-blue silk that flowed like water over her curves. It featured a delicate sweetheart neckline and an elegant slit up one leg, striking the perfect balance between sophisticated and breathtakingly alluring. With her dark curls pinned up in an elegant, loose updo and a simple diamond necklace—another gift Julian had surprised her with—resting against her collarbone, Maya hardly recognized the woman staring back at her. She didn't look like the exhausted, struggling florist from a month ago. She looked radiant. She looked loved. The bedroom door clicked open, and Julian stepped inside. He stopped dead in his tracks. He was dressed in a classic, impeccably tailored black tuxedo, looking like a modern-day James Bond. But all of his legendary composure vanished the second his eyes landed on Maya. He didn't say a word for a long moment. He just looked at her, his chest rising and falling visibly as he drank her in. "Julian?" Maya whispered, suddenly feeling a spark of nervous heat rush to her cheeks under his intense, burning gaze. "Is it too much?" "Maya," Julian finally spoke, his voice incredibly thick and rough. He crossed the room slowly, as if approaching an absolute masterpiece. "You are... you are the most stunning woman I have ever laid eyes on. I am going to have to spend the entire night fighting off every man in that ballroom." Maya laughed, the nervous tension instantly evaporating. She turned to face him fully, placing her hands flat against his solid chest. "You won't have to fight anyone, Mr. Sterling. I’m only here with you." Julian closed his eyes briefly, leaning down to rest his forehead against hers. "I love you," he murmured softly. "Are you ready for this?" "As long as you’re holding my hand," Maya replied truthfully. When they arrived at the Waldorf Astoria, the entrance was swarming with flashing cameras and reporters. Julian didn't flinch. He stepped out of the sleek black Maybach first, offering his hand to Maya. As she stepped out into the crisp evening air, the cameras went into a frenzy. Julian wrapped a firm, protective arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. He didn't hide her, and he didn't rush. He walked her proudly up the red carpet, looking down at her with a smile so full of absolute devotion that the press completely forgot to ask their usual aggressive business questions. Inside the ballroom, the gala was a resounding success. The room was packed with the most influential people in the city, and everywhere they went, people were talking about the flowers. "Julian, my boy, this is magnificent!" an older, distinguished gentleman said, approaching them with a glass of champagne. He was Richard Vance, one of Sterling Enterprises' oldest board members. "I must say, I was skeptical when you fired the corporate planners, but this decor is absolutely brilliant. Who on earth did you hire?" Julian smiled, his arm tightening proudly around Maya’s waist. "Richard, allow me to introduce my partner, Maya Lin. She is the owner of *Petals & Dreams*, the genius behind tonight's arrangements." Richard’s eyes widened in genuine surprise before he offered Maya a warm, respectful smile. "Ms. Lin, it is an absolute honor. You have an extraordinary gift. My wife hasn't stopped talking about the orchids since we arrived." "Thank you, Mr. Vance," Maya replied gracefully, feeling a profound surge of confidence. "It was a joy to design them." Throughout the night, Julian never left her side. He introduced her not just as a florist, but as the woman he loved. There were no judgmental whispers, no snobby heiresses trying to tear her down. Instead, there was genuine respect. Julian had created a world where Maya was completely safe to shine. As the evening wound down and a soft jazz band began to play a slow melody, Julian set his empty champagne flute on a passing tray and turned to her. "Dance with me?" he asked softly, offering his hand. Maya smiled, placing her hand in his. He led her to the center of the dance floor, pulling her close. Maya rested her head against his shoulder, swaying gently to the music. Surrounded by the beautiful flowers she had arranged, in the arms of the man who had changed her entire world, Maya closed her eyes. It wasn't a fairy tale anymore. It was her real life, and it was absolutely perfect.
