Chapter 8: The CEO’s Day Off

1383 Words
The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse, casting a warm, golden glow across the massive king-sized bed. Maya woke up slowly, blinking against the bright morning light. The first thing she registered was the heavy, comforting weight of a strong arm draped securely over her waist. She turned her head slightly on the plush silk pillow and found Julian fast asleep beside her. He looked entirely different from the terrifying, ruthless CEO who had defended her in the flower shop the evening before. In sleep, the harsh, commanding lines of his face were completely relaxed. His dark hair was charmingly messy, falling over his forehead, and his breathing was deep and even. However, as Maya looked closer, she noticed the faint, dark circles under his beautiful eyes. Julian worked entirely too hard. He carried the weight of a multi-billion-dollar empire on his broad shoulders, managing thousands of employees, endless board meetings, and stressful global acquisitions. He was always taking care of everyone else, especially her, but who took care of Julian? An overwhelming wave of deep, protective affection washed over Maya’s heart. Carefully, so as not to wake him, she gently lifted his heavy arm and slid out of the warm bed. She padded softly across the dark hardwood floor, still wearing his massive gray hoodie from the night before, and made her way down the long hallway to his ultra-modern kitchen. The kitchen looked like it belonged in a magazine—sleek black marble countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a massive espresso machine that looked complicated enough to launch a spaceship. Maya opened the massive double-door refrigerator. Unsurprisingly, it was mostly stocked with bottled water, expensive champagne, and a few basic ingredients that his housekeeper probably kept fresh. "Alright," Maya whispered to herself, rolling up the oversized sleeves of the hoodie. "Let's see what we can do." She found some eggs, fresh milk, a loaf of artisan bread, and a basket of strawberries. Humming a soft, cheerful tune, Maya set to work. She decided to make fluffy scrambled eggs, perfectly buttered toast, and a mountain of sliced strawberries. She even managed to figure out the intimidating espresso machine, brewing two large, steaming cups of rich vanilla coffee. Back in the master bedroom, Julian shifted against the sheets. His hand reached out automatically, searching for the warm, soft body that had been curled against his chest all night. When his hand met empty, cold sheets, his dark eyes snapped open instantly. A momentary spike of panic hit his chest. Had she left? Had she realized that being with a man who came with so much baggage and corporate chaos was too much for her? Julian practically threw the heavy duvet off his body, his bare feet hitting the floor. He was halfway to the bedroom door when the most heavenly, comforting smell drifted down the hallway. Fresh coffee and buttered toast. He froze, his racing heart slowly calming down. He followed the scent down the hall, his steps completely silent. When he reached the kitchen, he stopped in the doorway, completely mesmerized by the sight before him. Maya was standing by the stove, flipping eggs with a small, contented smile on her beautiful face. She was wearing his oversized hoodie, which completely swallowed her small frame, her bare legs looking incredibly soft against the dark floor. The morning sunlight caught her dark curls, making her look like a literal angel who had decided to grace his cold, lonely penthouse. Julian leaned against the doorframe, a profound, overwhelming sense of love hitting him so hard it actually made his chest ache. He didn't say a word. He just stood there, completely captivated by the absolute peace she brought into his chaotic world. Maya turned around to grab a plate and gasped softly, nearly dropping it. "Julian! You scared me," she laughed, pressing a hand to her chest. She looked at him closely, her smile softening into a look of gentle concern. He was wearing soft gray sweatpants, his broad chest completely bare, but he looked incredibly exhausted. The adrenaline of the previous day’s storm and confrontation had clearly worn off, leaving him drained. Julian walked slowly into the kitchen, closing the distance between them. He didn't care about the food. He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and buried his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in her sweet scent of vanilla and flowers. "Good morning," he mumbled into her skin, his deep voice thick and raspy with sleep. "I woke up and you were gone. I didn't like it." Maya smiled, running her fingers gently through his messy dark hair. "I didn't go far, sweetheart. I just wanted to make you breakfast. You look exhausted, Julian." Julian sighed heavily, pulling back just enough to look at her. "I have three board meetings today, a conference call with Tokyo, and I need to review the quarterly financial reports. I'll be fine once I get some coffee in me." He reached for the coffee cup on the counter, but Maya quickly stepped in front of it, crossing her arms over her chest. "Absolutely not," Maya said, her voice unusually firm, though her eyes were incredibly soft. Julian blinked, completely taken aback. He was the CEO of Sterling Holdings. No one, absolutely no one, ever told him 'no'. "Maya..." "Julian Sterling, you are running on empty," Maya stated, poking a gentle finger against his solid chest. "You take care of everything and everyone, but today, you are staying right here. You are not going to a single board meeting. You are not looking at a single financial report. Today is an official mental health day." Julian stared at her, a mixture of shock and profound amusement dancing in his dark eyes. "Sweetheart, I can't just not show up. The company—" "The company will survive one day without you," Maya interrupted smoothly. She reached up, gently cupping his handsome face in her hands, her thumbs brushing across his cheekbones. "Please, Julian. For me? Just let me take care of you for one day. Come back to bed." Julian looked down into her wide, pleading, beautiful eyes. He could have negotiated a multi-million-dollar merger blindfolded, but looking at Maya, he was completely and utterly defenseless. He let out a low, defeated chuckle, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her lips. "You are a very dangerous woman, Maya Hayes. You just brought the most ruthless CEO in the city to his knees with a single look." "Good," Maya beamed, extremely proud of her victory. "Now, carry this tray. We are eating breakfast in bed." Ten minutes later, Julian found himself propped up against a mountain of soft pillows, eating fluffy scrambled eggs while Maya sat cross-legged beside him. He couldn't remember the last time he had taken a sick day or a rest day. His entire life had been a non-stop, high-speed train of stress and responsibilities. But sitting here, eating breakfast with the woman he loved, the heavy, suffocating pressure in his chest completely vanished. "This is incredible," Julian admitted, finishing his coffee. He set the tray aside and immediately pulled Maya down against his chest, wrapping his arms securely around her. Maya rested her cheek against his bare chest, listening to the strong, steady rhythm of his heart. "See? I told you. Sometimes you just need to stop moving and breathe." "I never knew how to just breathe before I met you," Julian confessed softly, his fingers gently tracing soothing circles on her back. He kissed the top of her head, his eyes closing in pure, absolute contentment. "Thank you, Maya. For the breakfast, for forcing me to rest... for simply existing." "You never have to thank me for caring about you, Julian," Maya whispered back, shifting closer to his warmth. "I’m exactly where I want to be." For the rest of the day, the billionaire CEO didn't answer a single phone call or check a single email. He stayed right there, wrapped in the warm, comfortable silence of his bedroom, holding his entire world safely in his arms. And for the first time in his life, Julian Sterling rested, completely healed by the simple, profound magic of being loved.
