I kiss his brow, even though I recognize that we haven’t quite reached that level of intimacy yet and I cringe as soon as I pull my lips away. I tell myself that at least this happened at night. In the morning, I’ll be able to pretend none of it was real. He’s silent as I slide off him and make my way back to the passenger’s seat. “Sleep,” is all he says as he tucks himself away and leans back in his seat. I almost bark out an incredulous laugh. Sleep feels impossible. But when I lie back and close my eyes, body still thrumming from head to toe, I feel it creep up on me. Turns out that running out on your wedding, crashing your car, and almost drowning is more draining than I would have thought.
