Chapter 2: The Forbidden Connection

1106 Words
I stood at the edge of the Moonstone Pack’s border, my pulse a steady drum in my chest. It wasn’t the pack I feared—it was him. Adrian Blackwood. The man who had invaded my dreams and my thoughts, despite my best efforts to keep him out. I didn’t know how long I had been standing there, trying to gather the courage to step into his world. But I knew one thing for certain: everything was about to change. His presence was unmistakable before I even saw him, a tension in the air, a sharp crackle of something ancient and undeniable. It was the bond, I realized with a jolt—our bond. His scent lingered on the wind, a mix of pine and the deep earth of the woods, and just beneath that, something darker. Something dangerous. I turned my head, and there he was. Adrian, standing in the clearing just beyond the trees, his gaze already fixed on me. His posture was rigid like he was forcing himself to keep his distance, but I could see the pull in his eyes—the same pull I felt, a magnet that tugged at my soul. "You shouldn't be here," he said, his voice low, rough. His eyes flicked to the horizon as if hoping the distance would put more space between us than the mere physical. I stepped closer, ignoring the warning in his tone. "I don't need your permission." His eyes hardened. "You don't understand. This... whatever this is between us—it's dangerous." "Tell me about it," I muttered, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “I didn’t ask for any of this, Adrian.” He took a step toward me, his brow furrowing. “Neither did I, but you’re not listening. You don’t understand what’s at stake.” I tilted my head, meeting his gaze head-on. “I understand perfectly well. But what I don’t understand is why you keep running from this. From us.” I regretted the words as soon as they left my mouth. The pull was unbearable now, sharper, a burn that surged through my chest. My mind screamed at me to step back, but my body refused to obey. Adrian’s jaw clenched, his fists tightening at his sides. “You have no idea how much I want to pull you close. You think this is easy for me?” His voice was a whisper now, raw and full of pain. "Then stop fighting it," I said, my breath hitching in my chest. Adrian’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, and then, without thinking, he moved toward me. I couldn’t breathe as he stepped closer, his towering frame blocking out the fading light. My body felt like it was caught between ice and fire, the pull between us so overwhelming I couldn’t think. He stopped just inches from me, his warm breath brushing my skin. "You feel it too, don’t you?" he whispered, his voice rough, cracking with desire. His lips grazed the curve of my ear, sending a shiver down my spine. I closed my eyes against the sensation, my heart racing. “Stop...” The word barely escaped my lips. I didn’t want him to stop. Not now. Not ever. I could hear the sound of his breath hitching, his fingers brushing the back of my neck, and the world felt like it was shrinking to just the two of us. His lips hovered just above mine, and I could feel the war waging inside him. He wanted me, I could tell, but the weight of his obligations, the pack, and his mate—they were holding him back. And so was I. I took a shaky breath, pulling back just enough to meet his eyes. “This is wrong,” I whispered. “We can’t do this.” Adrian’s gaze darkened, and for a long moment, he said nothing. He simply stared at me, the raw desire in his eyes battling with something darker, something he wouldn’t let himself feel. “I know,” he said finally, his voice a tortured rasp. Before I could respond, the snap of a twig echoed in the clearing. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Seraphina’s presence was like a shadow—a cold, biting presence that immediately sent a chill down my spine. “I knew I’d find you here,” Seraphina said, her voice ice-cold. She stepped out of the trees, her eyes narrowing as she took in the space between Adrian and me. Her gaze flicked to his face, and then to me before her lips curled into a tight, controlled smile. Adrian stepped back from me almost instantly, like the connection between us had been severed with a single movement. His expression was unreadable now, his mask of duty slipping back into place. “What is she doing here?” Seraphina’s voice was laced with suspicion, and I saw her eyes flicker with a faint trace of jealousy. I took a step back too, closing the distance between us. I couldn’t afford to be this close to him—not with her here. Not with the weight of everything hanging between us. “I... I was just leaving,” I said, turning away before my voice could betray the storm brewing inside me. “No, you’re not,” Seraphina snapped. “You’re staying right where you are.” I froze, my back still turned to her. There was no hiding now. She knew something. The way she was looking at me, the suspicion in her eyes—it wasn’t just the usual suspicion. She knew something more. "You don't belong here," she added, stepping closer to Adrian, and placing a possessive hand on his arm. “And I won’t let you tear my family apart.” I fought the urge to turn around, to face them both. But I could feel the weight of her words press down on me like a vice. She was dangerous—she was as much a part of this twisted web as Adrian and I. The tension in the air was suffocating. Adrian’s eyes flicked to me, a silent apology in his gaze. But he didn’t speak. His loyalty to her was unyielding, even as the bond between us threatened to break him in two. Seraphina’s eyes narrowed, a cold smile playing at the corners of her lips. “I know what you’re hiding, Lila,” she said, her voice sharp as a blade. “And I won’t let you destroy my marriage—or my pack.”
