Chapter 4: The Curse Awakens

I could feel it—the power growing inside me, twisting my very bones. My body, once a battlefield of emotions, was now a warzone of magic, ancient and unfamiliar. The deeper I went into my pregnancy, the harder it became to control it. Every time fear, anger, or even sorrow crept up, the power surged, lashing out like a wild animal in a cage. I breathed in deeply, trying to steady myself. The moonlight filtered through the trees as I sat on the edge of a rock near the pack’s border, my fingers pressed against the stone, grounding myself. “Lila?” I didn’t need to turn to know who it was. His voice was like a calming tide, pulling me from the storm brewing within. Adrian was always there, always watching, always knowing when I was on the edge. His presence was a balm and a curse all at once. I looked up at him, my heart tight in my chest. “I’m fine.” His brow furrowed, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he came closer, his large frame blocking out the moonlight. “You’re not fine. We both know it.” “I’m—” His hand was on my shoulder before I could finish, his touch gentle, but firm, pulling me into his arms. “We’ll find a way, Lila. I swear, we’ll fix this.” I closed my eyes, breathing in his scent. There was comfort in his arms, but there was also an ever-present tension, the curse between us, the bond that felt both like a blessing and a burden. I wanted to believe him, wanted to believe there was a solution, but the truth was, I didn’t know if there was a way out anymore. “Adrian,” I whispered, pulling back just enough to look into his eyes. “What if this—what if our child—is the cause of it all? What if it's not just a curse but the key to breaking it?” He shook his head, his grip tightening. “No. Don’t say that. You don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s not your fault.” But my heart told me otherwise. The power coursing through me, the way the magic reacted to my emotions—it wasn’t just a result of the bond. It was the child, and that terrified me. The visions, the whispers in the dark, and the way Yshtar had been growing stronger—it all pointed to one truth: the child I carried could either break the curse... or reignite it. I was so caught up in the thoughts swirling in my head that I didn’t notice the change in the air until it was too late. Adrian’s body stiffened beside me. I turned just in time to see Marcus stepping into the clearing, a sneer on his lips. “You should keep better control over her, Adrian,” Marcus said, his voice dripping with malice. “If the pack finds out about her… ‘abilities,’ they might start questioning your leadership.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Don’t start with me, Marcus.” “I’m not starting anything,” Marcus responded, his gaze flickering to me. “But you can only keep this secret for so long. Sooner or later, the pack will see the truth. And when they do, they won’t stand for it.” I stood up, my pulse quickening. “You don’t know anything about me, Marcus. You’re just looking for an excuse to tear everything apart.” He laughed, a cold, cruel sound. “Oh, I know exactly what’s happening here. I know you’re not just a lost soul, some random survivor hiding in the shadows. You’re dangerous. And I don’t think the pack wants that kind of danger so close to their alpha.” “You’re not going to turn the pack against me, Marcus,” Adrian growled, stepping forward, a dangerous edge to his tone. “Not today. Not ever.” Marcus didn’t back down. Instead, he smirked. “We’ll see about that. You can’t protect her forever, Adrian. There’s too much at stake.” I took a step forward, anger flaring in my chest. “Enough. Do you want to make this about power? Fine. But you’re wrong about me. You have no idea what I’m capable of, and you don’t want to push me further.” Marcus’s eyes narrowed, his lips curling into a vicious smile. “Oh, I’m counting on it.” Before I could say another word, a soft voice interrupted. “Enough!” Seraphina appeared at the edge of the clearing, her gaze flicking between us. There was something off about her, something that made my skin crawl. Her usually composed demeanor was cracking, the tension in her face unmistakable. “What do you want, Seraphina?” Adrian’s tone was cold, his voice a low growl. Her eyes landed on me, and for the first time, I saw something other than disdain in them. Was it fear? Jealousy? I couldn’t tell, but whatever it was, it sent a chill through me. “I want this madness to stop,” Seraphina said, her voice strained. “The pack is already starting to whisper. If you don’t do something, Adrian, everything we’ve worked for will be lost.” I stood tall, forcing the tremor in my hands to subside. “You don’t have to pretend anymore, Seraphina. We both know you’ve been working against me from the start.” Her eyes flashed with something dark. “I’ve done what I had to do. For the pack. For the future.” But Adrian’s gaze was unflinching. “You betrayed us. You betrayed me.” Seraphina didn’t flinch, but her eyes softened for a brief moment. “I did what I thought was best. But it’s too late now.” I stepped back, feeling the familiar pulse of power within me grow more intense. Something was wrong. The power was reacting—no, it was attacking—and it was all I could do to stay standing. “Lila?” Adrian whispered, his voice laced with concern. I shook my head, trying to clear the fog that was descending. “I don’t know what’s happening. I—” A sudden, sharp pain ripped through me, like a clawed hand grabbing at my insides, and I gasped, falling to my knees. “No!” Adrian cried out, rushing to catch me. But it wasn’t enough. The pain was blinding, overwhelming. My breath came in gasps, the power surging through my veins, faster and faster. Something was breaking—something inside of me, inside of the curse, inside of all of us. “I’m sorry,” I choked out, the words barely leaving my lips as the power swirled around me. And then, in the back of my mind, I heard it. A voice. Cold, ancient, and terrifying. “You cannot escape,” Yshtar’s voice echoed in my mind. “The bond is cursed, and you are mine.”
