Desperate Pleas

Alex was humming as she made her way back to her office when she felt a buzz from her phone. She paused and took a look at her phone, her face turning dark upon seeing the text from Pedro. "Oh man, what have I ever done wrong to deserve a man like you?" she grumbled as she read the instructions written in the text over and over by heart. Her mood was instantly spoiled. She had thought she would get a good rest in her office after taking care of so many patients this morning. Looks like there was no rest for someone like her who had the devil-like Pedro in her life. "Finish your task, bring Maya to the house. Do. Not. FAIL!" Alex read out the stern instructions once more before turning grumpily in another direction. Meanwhile, Maya sat beside her mother, both women watching Mara's sleeping form with heavy hearts. The steady beeping of the heart monitor filled the silence between them, a mechanical reminder of her sister's fragile condition. "She looks so peaceful when she sleeps," Sarah whispered, gently stroking Mara's hand. "Sometimes I wish she could just stay asleep until all this pain goes away." Maya nodded, her throat tight with emotion. She was about to respond when her phone suddenly rang, the sharp sound cutting through the quiet atmosphere of the hospital room. She glanced at the screen and frowned. It was an unknown number. "Excuse me, Mom," Maya said, standing up and moving toward the window. "I should take this." She swiped to answer. "Hello?" "Maya, it's Alex. Come outside." Maya's eyes widened in surprise. "Alex? How did you get my—" "Just come outside. Now." The line went dead. Maya stared at her phone, confusion washing over her. How had Alex gotten her number? And why was she here at the hospital? "Is there a problem, dear?" Sarah asked, noticing her daughter's troubled expression. "No, Mom," Maya said quickly, forcing a smile. "Just... work stuff. I'll be right back." She slipped out of the room, her mind racing with questions. As soon as she stepped into the corridor, she froze. Alex stood leaning against the opposite wall, dressed in scrubs with a hospital ID badge clipped to her pocket. "What are you doing here?" Maya demanded, her voice barely above a whisper. "I work here," Alex replied matter-of-factly. "What? You work here?" Maya repeated, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself and lowered it again. Alex nodded, seemingly amused by Maya's shock. "How? Why?" Maya sputtered, trying to process this new information. "Is that even a question?" Alex furrowed her brows, looking at Maya as if she'd asked something stupid. "I'm a doctor, and you know it." "And you're also a witch," Maya argued. "A good one," Alex chuckled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "But bring your voice down. You don't have to announce to everyone in the hospital that I'm... you know..." "Ah, that's true," Maya muttered to herself, remembering how Alex had used her power to heal the cat they had hit. That miraculous blue glow could actually be of good help to her sister. Then she suddenly looked up at Alex with a brightening face, hope blooming in her chest. Alex immediately cringed, knowing exactly what Maya was thinking. "It doesn't work that way," Alex shook her head preemptively. "What? You don't even know what I want to ask," Maya frowned, though her hopeful expression remained. "You want to ask me to use my power to heal your sister, don't you?" Alex smirked. "Yes! Why can't you do it?" Maya asked, her voice filled with desperate hope. "Because I can't," Alex said simply. "But I saw you bring an animal back to life with your power," Maya insisted, taking a step closer. "You saved that cat. You brought it back from the brink of death!" "That's an animal," Alex said, her expression growing serious. "We're talking about a human being here. Your sister will get better, trust me. She just needs to endure the pain a little more." "But you could lift the pain now and make life easier for her," Maya pleaded, her voice breaking slightly. "Why don't you just heal her? Please." "I can't, Maya." "Why not?" Maya's voice cracked with frustration and desperation. Alex's expression softened, but her resolve remained firm. "Trust me, I have my reasons, and you wouldn't want to know them." Maya felt her hope crumbling into bitter disappointment. "Just say you don't want to heal her," she said coldly before turning to head back inside. "Please get ready," Alex called after her. "In the next thirty minutes, I'll come pick you up." Maya paused, her hand on the door handle. "To where?" she asked with a glare. "To Pedro. Please don't run away like last time." "Depends on my mood," Maya smirked before slamming the door behind her. Alex felt goosebumps fill her body from that smirk. For the next five minutes, she remained in the corridor, pacing back and forth in front of the room. Her mind raced with worry—what if Maya decided to run away again since she had refused to heal her sister? She couldn't afford to fail her task once more. Pedro's patience had limits, and she had already tested them. After a moment of internal debate, she pulled out her phone and dialed Maya's number again. "What is it?" Maya's voice was harsh as she answered, clearly still upset. "You will be ready, right?" Alex asked hesitantly. "Is that why you're calling me? Just leave me alone—" Maya was about to end the call when Alex quickly interrupted. "Don't end the call, Maya! Just listen to me," Alex pleaded, desperation creeping into her voice. "What is it?" Maya asked, though her tone remained cold. Alex took a deep breath. "I can't cure her, but I can ease her pain a little. How about that?" There was a pause on the other end. "Um, not enough, but manageable," Maya replied, a hint of hope returning to her voice. Alex suddenly ended the call and burst into the room, startling both Maya and Sarah. "Excuse me," Alex said professionally, flashing her hospital ID. "I need to examine the patient. Could you both step outside for a few minutes?" Maya, understanding exactly what Alex intended to do, quickly stood up. "Mom, let's go get some coffee," she said, gently guiding Sarah toward the door. "But we can just stay here quietly—" Sarah protested. "It'll just be a few minutes," Maya insisted, practically dragging her mother out of the room. They waited in the corridor, Sarah chatting nervously about hospital procedures while Maya's heart pounded with anticipation. After what felt like an eternity, Alex emerged from the room, sweat beading on her forehead and her face slightly pale from the exertion. Sarah was the first to rush back inside, with Maya close behind. "Thanks," Maya muttered quietly as she passed Alex. "Just get ready," Alex replied breathlessly before walking away down the corridor. When Maya entered the room, her breath caught in her throat. Mara was sitting up in bed, her eyes bright and alert in a way they hadn't been in weeks. Color had returned to her cheeks, and the tight lines of pain that had been etched around her eyes were gone. "Maya!" Mara called out, her voice stronger than it had been in days. "I feel... I feel like I can breathe again. The crushing weight in my chest is gone, and that constant burning sensation has disappeared. It's like someone lifted a heavy blanket off of me." Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Oh my God, Mara! You look so much better!" She rushed to her daughter's side, tears streaming down her face as she carefully embraced her. "Your color is back, and your eyes... they're so bright again!" "I don't understand it either," Mara said, wonder in her voice. "One moment I was drowning in pain, and the next, it was like someone had turned down the volume on everything that hurt. I still feel weak, but the pain... it's bearable now." Maya felt her heart swell with happiness and overwhelming gratitude. She joined the embrace, holding her sister tightly while silently thanking Alex in her heart. For the first time in weeks, hope didn't feel like a cruel joke.
