Maya swallowed nervously and took some wary steps back, her palms turning sweaty as she rubbed them against her sides. The cool air of the mansion suddenly felt suffocating. And she couldn't help but wonder what she had done wrong. Not only had she not gotten the job, she was about to be... what?
Seeing how things were turning out, Beatrice quietly slipped out of the room, her footsteps eerily silent against the expensive flooring. Her work there was finished.
"What are you doing? Do you want me to repeat myself?" Pedro snarled at the guards who remained transfixed and motionless as they stared at the lady they'd been instructed to flog, recognition dawning on their faces.
It was strange. The tension in the room crackled like static electricity.
"What is wrong?" Pedro raised his sharp brows deadly at them, his voice filling with curiosity and suspicion.
"B-boss, she's the lady you asked us to find," one of the guards slowly muttered, looking down in embarrassment. One thought only flooding their minds: How did this lady find her way to this house? Now, she had not just disgraced them but also made them incapable of carrying out their assignments.
Maya was taken aback by the words from the guards, her pulse thundering in her ears. Now, the situation was getting more confusing and scary. Why were they looking for her?
Pedro furrowed his brows as he took a suspicious gaze at Maya, his eyes wandering from her sunset hair to her legs and back to her eyes. This just confirmed his gut feeling—this strange lady was dangerous; she could definitely be a spy.
*Either she's naive coming to this house or she's just dumb.*
"Take her to the dungeon," Pedro commanded, each word dripping with ice.
"Yes, boss," the guards chorused before walking over to Maya, their boots echoing ominously against the floor.
"What? Where's that?" Maya asked, protesting as the guards tried to grab her.
"It's a place you will be locked up and tortured until you confess your mission in this house," Pedro stated dismissively, his voice devoid of emotion.
"Why? What has she done?" Alex asked, staring incredulously at Pedro.
"It's none of your business, Alex. Take her out," Pedro said, but then he remembered she was a boxer. "If you think you're strong, try resisting them and see the way I blow your brains out." Pedro looked into Maya's eyes and warned. To show Maya that he wasn't joking, he pulled out a gun from his waist and pointed it at her, the metal gleaming wickedly in the light.
Maya's heart skipped a beat as she gulped in fright, the reality of the terrifying situation dawning on her. Just what kind of household had she unknowingly walked into? This wasn't what she had bargained for. Look what her tongue had caused.
"I'm not strong at all. Please, I'm sorry. You can scold your wife. I won't interfere. I won't talk again. I'm only here for the job and nothing else." Maya tried to explain, but her words fell on deaf ears as the guards grabbed her and started pulling her toward the door.
Alex just chuckled silently when she heard Maya's words. 'She looks so rough and dangerous, but her heart is pure and selfless,' she muttered. It's only a pity that Pedro couldn't see that.
"What's that?" Pedro looked over at Alex.
"Nothing," Alex shook her head, her brown curls bouncing softly.
"Please, I'm sorry, don't do this. I beg of youuuu..." Maya continued to plead. But the guards were relentless and merciless as they pulled her out of the room, the heavy doors closing behind them with a resounding thud.
Pedro was about to sigh in relief since the nuisance was finally out of his space when he felt a sharp pain in his chest. Blood instantly drained from his face as he held onto his chest, his knuckles turning white with the force of his grip.
"What exactly had she done to you? You don't even know her. Please don't do this, don't torture the poor girl for nothing. She's just young and naive." Alex began pleading as she turned to look at Pedro, but her eyes widened at his sudden distress.
"What is it?" Alex asked, furrowing her brows in confusion as concern coated her face.
"I don't know, it's as if the pain suddenly intensified. My heart is piercing," Pedro stated breathlessly, sweat beading on his forehead. "This is exactly how I felt at the hospital that day." He was struggling to breathe as the pain became harder to bear. He was already on his knees while clutching the wounded side of his chest tight, his expensive suit wrinkling against the marble floor.
Alex was amazed. "Why do you feel the same with two different girls?" She blinked perplexingly.
"What do you mean? She's the same girl," Pedro finally confessed, his voice raw with pain.
"What?" Alex was blown away by the shocking revelation. "Tell them to bring her back," she persuaded, placing a soothing pat on Pedro.
"Don't f*****g touch me," Pedro raised his arm, pushing Alex back into the couch with enough force to make the leather creak. "What are you doing?"
"I'm sorry. I got carried away." Alex bit her lips and explained, shrinking back into the plush cushions.
"Don't ever try it again. This would be the last time I will warn you." Pedro seethed through gritted teeth. He tried to get up but couldn't. The pain was just too much to bear, making his breath come in short, sharp gasps.
"Pedro, please tell them to bring Maya back." Alex repeated what she had said earlier, which Pedro didn't reply to.
"Why? You think she stimulated the pain?" Pedro glared at his ridiculous friend, his green eyes blazing with intensity.
"No, Pedro. But I think she influenced it somehow. Before she came into the picture, you had never felt this way. Don't you remember how you had felt in the hospital that very day when your bodies touched?"
Pedro was silent for a moment as he relished that moment of peace he felt briefly with her touch, the memory providing a momentary respite from his current agony.
"I assessed her with my powers, and believe me when I say this: she's a virgin. And there's this energy coming from her which I believe had influenced your situation somehow." Alex explained, her voice taking on an otherworldly quality that seemed to make the air itself vibrate.
Although the requirements for the job included a virgin, many people undermined it and still applied. They were surprised when they were found out without any form of test.
Yes, Alex had assessed them with her four sight.
"That's a lie." Pedro gritted his teeth while blinking a tear away, the droplet catching the light like a diamond. "She doesn't look like one. She's just a witch like you. And besides, adding more pain to my misery isn't a good thing at all."
"You know I can't play with your health, Pedro. I know she's a witch, but try to confirm the positive effect she had on you. Come to think of it," Alex thought a little before continuing, her fingers drumming thoughtfully on the armrest. "I didn't really see you feeling any pain at all while she was here."
Pedro went silent... it was true. It's true that his pain was always minimal during the daytime, but he hadn't felt any at all when Maya was here.
"I will tell them to bring her back. Try to sit properly on the couch," Alex said before walking out of the room, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.
Pedro swallowed. He mustered all his strength to pick himself up from the floor as he slowly sat on the couch. If not that he was a strong man, he would be rolling on the floor and crying in pain because it was so excruciating.
A few minutes later, Alex cat-walked back into the room with Maya walking behind her. Alex watched as Pedro's expression went from painful to normal and smiled. She went over to Pedro and slowly lowered herself beside him.
Maya was silent as she looked down, feeling all kinds of emotions running through her. This is such a dangerous place, and she wished nothing at that point but to just disappear from there and away from this man's sight.
"You're starting work from this minute," Pedro suddenly announced, his voice steady now, though a slight sheen of sweat still glistened on his forehead.
"What?" Maya gasped, raising her head to stare warily at Pedro. She had expected to be rejected and thrown out of the house. No, that's exactly what she had prayed and hoped for. She couldn't work under this bloody environment at all.
"Maya, dear, your boss is so hot-headed, and he wishes to apologize for his bad behavior earlier. I'm happy he's giving you the job finally." Alex smiled, the warmth in her voice making the tension still thick in the air a little more livable.
"That's not what I meant," Pedro defended, turning to glare at Alex, his jaw clenching visibly.
"Well, I'm glad you meant otherwise. Please forgive me, can I just go home now? I don't need the job anymore," Maya said, shocking them.
