Shattered Loyalty

The words landed like a gunshot.Russell’s chest tightened.Giovanni stood slowly. For the first time since he entered the room, they stood face to face. The chemistry between them crackled like exposed wires. Dangerous.Unfinished.“You called me a biological necessity,” she said quietly.Russell flinched.“You planned to exile me after I gave birth.” His silence confirmed it. Giovanni’s expression hardened further.“So yes,” she finished softly. “I ran.” Russell felt something fracture inside his chest.Because she wasn’t wrong. But that didn’t change the one thing he knew with absolute certainty. He stepped closer.“Leo is my son.”Giovanni didn’t back away. “And I will never let you take him,” she said. The war had officially begun. The silence inside Giovanni’s office stretched like a wire pulled too tight. Neither of them moved. Russell stood across the desk, tall and immovable, his golden eyes burning with something dangerously close to fury and something else he refused to name.Giovanni stood her ground. Five years ago, she would have trembled under that gaze. Five years ago, she had lived for any scrap of approval from the Alpha standing in front of her. Now she simply looked at him.Cool.Measured.Untouchable. “You’re still staring,” she said calmly.Russell’s jaw tightened. “You’re still lying.”Giovanni tilted her head slightly.“About what?”“About thinking you can keep my son from me.” The words vibrated with possessive certainty.Giovanni folded her arms. “Watch me.”Russell took a slow step closer. The room seemed smaller with him in it. “You’ve built a clever life,” he said quietly. “New name. New reputation. A city that doesn’t know who you really are.”His gaze sharpened.“But don’t mistake distance for safety.”Giovanni didn’t flinch. “You came here to threaten me?” “No.” Russell’s voice dropped lower. “I came here to give you a choice.”Her lips curved faintly.“That’s funny.”“Why?”“Because the last time you gave me a choice, the options were ‘obey’ or ‘disappear.’”Russell said nothing. Because it wasn’t wrong. Giovanni leaned slightly against the desk.“So tell me, Alpha. What are my options this time?” Russell held her gaze.“You bring Leo to the Van-Doren estate.”The words landed like iron. Giovanni’s eyes hardened. “No.” “You didn’t hear the rest.”“I don’t need to.”Her answer came instantly.Russell’s wolf stirred angrily.“You’re still stubborn.”“And you’re still entitled.”For a moment, the tension between them was electric. Then Russell spoke again. “He deserves to know his father.”Giovanni’s composure cracked just slightly.“You mean the man who planned to exile his mother after she gave birth?”Russell’s expression darkened. “That was five years ago.” “And?” “And things change.”Giovanni laughed softly. It wasn’t a happy sound.“Do they?”Russell stepped closer again. Now they were only a few feet apart.“You think I’m the same man who stood in that office?” “Yes.”The answer came without hesitation.Russell inhaled sharply.Giovanni’s eyes were merciless.“You’re still an Alpha who sees people as assets,” she said quietly.“You saw me as a womb.”The bluntness of it hit harder than any accusation.Russell’s hands clenched. “And yet you still came back,” he said. Giovanni didn’t blink.“I came back to work.”“No.”His voice dropped.“You came back to my territory.”Her eyes flashed. “This city isn’t yours.” Russell smiled faintly.“It might as well be.”The old arrogance. The same cold authority that once terrified her but Giovanni wasn’t the same woman anymore. She stepped closer until they stood inches apart.“Let me make something very clear,” she said quietly.Russell waited.“You will not control my life.”Her voice hardened.“And you will not control Leo’s. Russell studied her face.He saw the difference now. The softness she once carried was gone.In its place was steel. Five years had sharpened her into something formidable.Part of him hated it. Another part… respected it. “You’ve changed,” he murmured. Giovanni shrugged. “Survival does that.”A long silence followed. Then Russell said something unexpected.“I thought you were dead.”Giovanni blinked. That wasn’t the direction she expected.Russell’s voice grew quieter. “When they pulled that body from the summer house… I believed it.” Giovanni said nothing.“The explosion destroyed everything,” he continued. “There was nothing left to question.”His gaze flickered with something darker.“I hunted the people responsible for years.” Giovanni studied him carefully. “You’re telling me you mourned me?”Russell hesitated.“Yes.”The word was almost reluctant.Giovanni didn’t know what to do with that.Because five years ago, Russell Van-Doren had never shown grief. Never shown weakness. Now there was something hollow behind his eyes. “You buried me,” she said quietly.Russell nodded once.Giovanni looked away briefly. For the first time since he entered the room, the air between them shifted. Not softer but heavier. “You should have stayed gone,” Russell said suddenly. Her head snapped back.“That’s rich.”His voice darkened again. “Because now that I know you’re alive…” Giovanni’s instincts screamed. Russell stepped even closer. “…I’m not letting you disappear again.” There it was. The truth beneath everything else.Possession. Giovanni felt anger surge.“You don’t get to decide that.”Russell’s golden eyes glowed faintly.“Try me.”The temperature in the room seemed to drop.Neither of them noticed the quiet knock outside the office door. Until it opened. A nurse stepped inside nervously. “Dr. Kove?”Giovanni turned. “Yes?”“There’s a visitor asking for you.”“I’m busy. The nurse hesitated. “He insisted.”Giovanni frowned. “Who?” Before the nurse could answer, a familiar voice spoke from the doorway.“I hope I’m not interrupting.”Xavier leaned casually against the frame. His dark eyes flicked between them. The tension in the room was obvious. His smile widened.“Well,” he said smoothly.“This is awkward.”Russell’s expression turned to stone. “What are you doing here?”Xavier ignored him.Instead, he looked directly at Giovanni. “Doctor.” His voice held an edge of amusement. “Or should I say… Luna?” The word dropped like a grenade. Russell’s head snapped toward him.Giovanni went perfectly still Xavier pushed off the doorway and walked inside. “I was wondering how long it would take for the truth to surface.”Russell’s voice was lethal.
