The cabin smelled like sage and burnt toast.
I'd learned to live with that combination. Mora said the sage kept us hidden from magical tracking. The burnt toast was just me being a terrible cook.

I turned from the stove to find Ember hovering three feet off the ground, her dark curls floating around her face like she was underwater. Her eyes, Kade's eyes, that storm-gray that made my chest ache every time I looked at her, were bright with excitement.
"Baby, we talked about this." I kept my voice calm even though my heart was racing. "Feet on the floor."
"But I can fly now! Mora said I'm getting stronger!"
