The unseen burden

1307 Words
The following days were a blur of meetings and calls, as Dera fought to maintain control over everything. The merger was at the forefront of her mind, but the weight of her responsibilities was slowly beginning to take its toll. She wasn’t used to feeling overwhelmed, yet the pressure was growing unbearable. Every morning, she woke up earlier, stayed at the office later, and drowned herself in the demands of her father, her company, and the expectations that came with being the heir to the Smith legacy. Despite her relentless focus, one thing became undeniable—the growing distance between her and Richard. She had tried to ignore it, to push it to the back of her mind, but there was a constant presence he left in her thoughts. Every conversation, every glance in his direction, left her wondering if he knew how much his words and actions were starting to make an impact on her. He didn’t just challenge her professionally; he made her question the very foundation of the life she had built around herself. Dera often found herself reflecting on those quiet moments when it was just the two of them. She had seen the way he looked at her, his gaze steady and not filled with the reverence most people reserved for the heiress to Smith Enterprises. Richard was different. He didn’t idolize her, didn’t seek approval from her. He saw her as an equal, which in turn made her question if she saw him in the same light. But that line—between respect, admiration, and something deeper—was still too blurry. And she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face it. Richard, on the other hand, had spent the past few days observing the shift in Dera’s demeanor. At first, he hadn’t noticed much—she was always guarded, always in control. But now, he could see the cracks in her armor. The way her shoulders seemed a little more burdened, her smile a little more strained. It wasn’t like her to show any weakness, especially not to him. Yet, Richard couldn’t deny it. Something was different. And it worried him. He had never been one to pry into personal matters, but there was an undeniable pull towards her, a sense of wanting to help, to ease whatever she was carrying. It wasn’t just professional anymore. Somewhere along the way, he had become invested in her well-being, in her happiness, and that was a dangerous path to tread. He wasn’t supposed to feel this way. But every time their paths crossed, he couldn’t help but wonder if she felt the same pull. If there was something deeper between them, beneath the surface, waiting to emerge. That thought gnawed at him constantly. He was too rational to entertain it, but every time he saw her, every time they spoke, it became harder to ignore. --- One particularly tense afternoon, Dera found herself walking through the expansive halls of Smith Enterprises. Her father’s office was just down the corridor, and she had been summoned to a meeting regarding the final steps of the merger. But as she approached her father’s office, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. “Ms. Smith,” a voice called out from behind her, and Dera turned to find Richard standing in the hallway. His expression was unreadable, but there was a sense of urgency in his eyes that immediately caught her attention. “Richard,” Dera acknowledged, her voice steady despite the turmoil she was feeling. “Is everything alright?” Richard hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I just wanted to check in before you head into your father’s office. There’s something I think you should be aware of regarding the final terms of the merger. Something that could change everything.” Dera’s eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?” Richard glanced around the hallway, his voice lowering. “I’ve been going over some of the documents, and I’ve found a discrepancy. One that could lead to major financial ramifications if we don’t address it now. If you’re not careful, your father may not be fully aware of the risk involved.” Dera’s heart raced, the weight of his words settling over her like a cloud of impending storm. “Are you suggesting that there’s something wrong with the deal?” she asked, her tone barely masking the rising concern. Richard nodded. “Yes. It’s subtle, but it’s there. I’ve outlined everything in a report, and I think it’s important that we review it before you finalize anything.” Dera bit her lip, torn between the urgency of the situation and the need to please her father. “I’ll look at it. But I’m due in a meeting with him now. If you could send the report to me, I’ll make sure it’s addressed immediately.” Richard’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer than necessary, his eyes softening. “Be careful, Dera. Your father may not be the only one who has an agenda here.” Her pulse quickened, but she kept her expression neutral. “I’ll be fine, Richard. Thank you for the heads-up.” As she turned to walk away, Dera felt a strange sense of gratitude mixed with apprehension. Richard’s words had triggered something within her—a spark of fear, but also a strange sense of connection. He cared enough to warn her, to make sure she knew the truth. And for the first time in a long time, she realized how much she appreciated that honesty. The meeting with her father, as expected, was tense. Mr Smith’s voice was sharp, his demands unyielding. Every word he spoke only served to remind Dera of the weight she carried on her shoulders. The merger, the company’s future, her father’s expectations—all of it was too much. By the time the meeting concluded, she was drained, her mind racing with the weight of everything that had been discussed. But as she walked out of her father’s office, she felt a pull toward her own office. She needed to review the documents Richard had mentioned. The urgency in his tone had sparked a new fire within her. She couldn’t afford to ignore it. Not now, not when everything was on the line. She walked briskly down the hallway to her office, not bothering to knock before entering. Sitting behind her desk, she opened her laptop and pulled up the report Richard had sent. The first few pages were technical, filled with figures and projections, but it didn’t take long before she found the discrepancy he had mentioned. Dera’s hands shook slightly as she processed the information. The implications were huge—this error, if left unchecked, could destabilize the entire deal. Her father would never forgive her if she let something like this slip through the cracks. But what unsettled her even more was the realization that Richard had caught it. Richard had done what she, in her haste to appease her father, had overlooked. And for the first time in a long time, she felt a sense of gratitude toward him that went beyond professional admiration. As she stared at the screen, her thoughts drifted once more to him—Richard, the man who had become an unexpected ally, a quiet force in her chaotic world. In the midst of everything, he was the one person who seemed to see her, truly see her—not as the CEO, not as the heiress to Smith Enterprises, but as someone who needed help, someone who wasn’t always in control. Dera sighed, running a hand through her hair. She had a lot of decisions to make, but for the first time in a long while, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face them all alone.
