Elena turned thirteen, and with adolescence came a new layer of confusion.
Her body was changing, her thoughts were shifting, and her heart longed for the simple joys of being a teenager — but the darkness that followed her each night never loosened its grip.
At school, she blossomed. Teachers praised her essays, and classmates admired her drawings. Sofia often teased her about how boys stared at her in the cafeteria, and Elena would roll her eyes, pretending not to notice. But inside, those stares didn’t feel flattering. They felt heavy. Unsafe.
When other girls whispered about first crushes and first kisses, Elena stayed quiet. Love — the kind they giggled about — seemed like a foreign concept. The word touch carried no warmth for her. It was tainted, wrapped in fear.
Her uncle, Javier, remained untouchable in the eyes of the family. By now, Elena had perfected her mask so well that no one questioned her silence. Her mother continued to trust him completely. Her father worked long hours, rarely home, and when he was, Javier’s presence filled the gaps with charm and “helpfulness.”
The nights, however, were unchanged. The same footsteps. The same door. The same silence. Each time, Elena would count in her head — one, two, three, four — hoping the numbers would distract her from what was happening. Sometimes she would bite her lip so hard she tasted blood, just to anchor herself in the moment.
By day, she was the star student. By night, she was a prisoner.
Still, the fire inside her refused to go out. She poured herself into art more than ever, painting pictures that told stories she couldn’t speak aloud. Her notebooks filled with words she dared not show anyone. Through colors and poetry, she found fragments of herself, pieces she wanted to hold onto despite the darkness.
At fifteen, she looked at the world around her and realized something: no matter how long the silence lasted, she wanted a future. She wanted to escape. She wanted to feel what her friends felt when they spoke about freedom and love.
For the first time, Elena began to dream of life beyond the walls of her home.
And though Javier’s shadow still loomed over her every night, the spark of resistance inside her grew brighter.
It wasn’t time yet. But soon, she knew, the silence would break.
