Tom's heart pounded as he eased the front door open, wincing at the slight creak of the hinges. The apartment was quiet, bathed in the soft light of early morning. He breathed a sigh of relief as he realized Emma must still be asleep. Guilt gnawed at him as he made his way to the kitchen, his head throbbing with each step. The events of the previous night played on a loop in his mind, fragmented and hazy. He couldn't shake the feeling that he'd made a terrible mistake, even if he couldn't remember exactly what had happened.
