Nathan's face went from furious to bloodless.
He didn't faint. He didn't even have an allergic reaction. He only glared at me with open hatred in his eyes.
Through the Bluetooth, Mia Lane gave a soft gasp.
"Mr. Carter, how could Mrs. Carter do that? She knows your health is fragile..."
I laughed.
"Ms. Lane, you care about him so much. Then turn on video. See for yourself whether he's allergic to perfume or simply allergic to me."
Nathan slammed on the brakes.
The car stopped outside Maple Grove Preschool.
He shoved the door open, got out, yanked off his jacket, and threw it into the trash.
Noah was too frightened to move. I unbuckled my seat belt and lifted him out of the car. He buried his face against my shoulder and whispered, "Mom, does Dad not love you anymore?"
I touched the back of his head.
Before I could answer, Nathan walked over with a cold expression.
"Claire, after the meeting, we're going to talk."
I looked at the perfume still clinging to his shirt.
"Talk about what?"
He gritted his teeth.
"About when you decided not to humiliate yourself in public."
Coming from Nathan, those words almost sounded funny.
The parent-teacher meeting had barely started when the teacher asked every child to introduce their family.
Noah stood at the front, clutching the hem of his shirt.
"My dad owns a company. My mom..." He glanced at me, and his voice dropped. "My mom cooks."
A few parents nearby chuckled.
Nathan sat beside me, his brows tightening.
It wasn't because he felt sorry for me. It was because he thought I had embarrassed him.
The teacher quickly tried to smooth things over.
"Noah's mom must take wonderful care of the family."
I smiled.
Before I could speak, the classroom door opened.
Mia stood at the entrance. She wore a white dress and low heels, with a cake box in her hand.
"I'm sorry I'm late."
The entire class turned to look.
She walked straight to Nathan and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Mr. Carter, this is the sugar-free cake you asked me to buy for Noah. Since today is his parent-teacher meeting, I thought I shouldn't come empty-handed."
The air went still.
I looked up at her.
"Which child's parent are you?"
Mia's face stiffened for a moment, but she quickly smiled again.
"Please don't misunderstand, Mrs. Carter. I'm just Mr. Carter's assistant. Mr. Carter is busy with work, so I often help him handle personal matters too."
She said personal matters as if the words meant nothing. But everyone in that classroom understood exactly what she meant.
Nathan snapped in a low voice, "Mia, get out."
Her eyes reddened. "Mr. Carter, I was only worried Noah wouldn't have cake."
Noah looked at the cake box and shrank into my arms.
"Mom, I don't want it."
Mia acted as if she hadn't heard him. She crouched down and held it out to him.
"Noah, I bought this for you. It even has your favorite teddy bear candle inside."
I stared at Nathan.
"How does she know our son likes teddy bears?"
Nathan avoided my eyes.
"I mentioned it once."
Mia smiled with perfect sweetness.
"Mr. Carter cares so much about Noah."
I almost applauded.
The teacher looked extremely uncomfortable.
"Ma'am, only parents are allowed during the parent-teacher meeting."
Mia stood up with a wounded expression.
"I'm not an outsider."
She looked at Nathan.
"Mr. Carter said Noah likes me very much."
I picked up the cake box and opened it in front of every parent in the classroom.
There was mango filling inside.
I pushed the cake in front of Nathan.
"Noah is allergic to mango. As his father, did you know that?"
