Run While You Still Can

Chapter Eight Lauren and Laurent were so ecstatic to be taken back to the Redwood pack, but I wasn't. There were memories that I tried to forget, and my heart was still in the process of healing. “Daddy can we get some ice cream?” Lauren asked. Gustavo had become Lauren's favorite parent and all through the drive she held on to him like he was her safety net. I was already jealous at how quickly they bonded. “How many cones do you want?” He asked, lifting her with ease and placing her on his chest as they led the way into the pack house. I was reminded of the good, the bad and the ugly days I experienced in this place and a smile played on my lips. “Alpha, we are under attack.” A soldier guarding the borders of the Redwood pack said. Gustavo, not wanting to create a stir or panic, gave Lauren and Laurent a tight hug and sent me a death glare which I interpreted as “don't you dare leave with my kids,” before he left with the guard. I knew my way around the pack and my house was still very much empty and dusty. Gerald had offered to take us to a luxurious condo in the heart of Canada, but I refused. I did not want anything from Gustavo and I hated owing anyone favors. After putting the twins to bed, I settled down on my favorite comfort chair and concentrated on my work back in England which I had left unattended to. As a painter, I was getting non-stop orders, hopefully I could draw a rough sketch tonight and finish it up tomorrow. Today was already draining for me, from getting caught at the airport, to returning to the pack, my life was moving in the opposite direction of where I wanted it to be. My phone rang, and the caller ID showed Alpha Benjamin. He was probably calling to know how the deal with the owl blue pack went. I picked on the second ring after rehearsing what I was going to say to him. “Camille, beta Gusto told me that Gustavo has you hostage in his pack, is that really true?” Alpha Benjamin asked, and I could already imagine him blaming himself. I expected him to be more concerned about the treaty agreement which I had failed to make a success. Instead, he was more concerned about my well-being. “I'll be fine Dad. For now, I need to find another way to leave without getting caught a second time.” “ I can send my best men to escort you to the airport. All you need to do is just say the word.” The last thing I wanted was for Alpha Benjamin to be making enemies for himself instead of allies. I responded by saying, “There will be no need for you to step in Dad, how's the hospital food.” I asked, changing the conversation and deviating his attention into something lighter. After my call with Alpha Benjamin, I began to draw neat lines on my canvas, but my mind, like it had a master of its own, kept on going back to the kiss at the full moon ball. ‘Get a grip Camille, you do not love him anymore.’ I tried convincing myself but my wolf's chuckle, caused my denial to vanish into thin air. I was angry with Gustavo, and I had a feeling forgiving him would not come easy, but my body still yearned for him and his touch was like a drug, addictive and difficult to get rid of. As I was still reeling in my mind, the hairs at the back of my head suddenly stood, and my wolf went on overdrive. ‘Someone’s here,’ she informed me. I pretended to walk towards the curtain to turn the switch off, it was then that I was able to catch a glimpse of a figure, dressed in a dark hoodie watching me from the window. I felt cold, and my body shivered from the unknown. The knock on my door caused me to wobble on my feet and my hand, which flew to the side, ended up hitting the bedside lamp, the crashing sound waking Laurent up. “Go back to sleep Laurent.” I whispered to him, rubbing his hair and he nodded, snuggling back into bed. The knock on the door continued and without thinking of my next move, I opened it. “You must be Camille, my name is Chloe, and I am Gustavo's wife.” The woman said, her words muffled, and she sounded as if she had speech impairment. The woman staggered a bit on her feet and when she flung her hair to the side, I caught a whiff of alcohol which explained why she had stutters in her speech. She was drunk. “Can we talk?” She asked, and her eyes stared into the room, her eyes fixated on the sleeping figure of the twins. I was hesitant to leave the room, not after knowing that I was being watched. “This will only take a minute.” Chloe said, smiling widely. “Sure.” I responded reluctantly and followed behind her. We ended up at the water fountain where Chloe revealed a full bottle of liquor hiding under the stool. “Care to join me for a drink?” Chloe offered, and I refused with a wave of my hand. I just wanted her to tell me why she brought me out of my room at this time of the night and at this point, I was trying my best to be polite. “Gustavo is cheating on me.” She broke the silence after taking a huge swing of her drink, “He is a monster who beats to a pulp at will and punishes me whenever he feels like it.” I sat beside her, surprised to find out that Gustavo was a woman beater. The Gustavo that I knew, never laid hands on a woman. So, it was surprising to hear that he did. “I am so sorry to hear that.” I said, trying to offer her my sympathy, but Chloe stared at me like I was crazy. “My best advice is for you to leave the pack before it is too late, he will hurt you next.” Chloe raised her shirt up, and I gasped when I saw a big scar jutting up from her arm. “Chloe, what do you think you are doing?” I heard Gustavo growl behind us and I jerked. “Telling her the truth about your monstrous behavior. She needs to be aware of who you are.” Chloe said, staggering on her feet. Gustavo moved to her side, holding her tightly on the wrist and pulling her to him. “Come with me.” “Let go of me Gustavo, you're hurting me.” Chloe cried out. “Let go of her Gustavo.” I pleaded, starting to believe what Chloe said about him. Gustavo roughly pushed her away from him, and Chloe tripped on the broken shards of glass which poked on her legs. Without looking at me, Gustavo walked away leaving behind Chloe who sobbed. I rushed to her side, trying to assist her when she grabbed me by the arm saying “Leave while you still can, he will kill you.”
