Chapter two “Well? I’m waiting someone talk.” The male spoke sternly with impatience. He was rather tall, with pitch black hair, pale skin and blue eyes. He wore a dark suit to match, black in colour with a white shirt and black blazer which showed off the matching waist coat. Ren leant back on the counter before he spoke. “Hey Mikey, Alice got into an accident and I wanted to get the guy for it.” He says smoothly. The dark haired male glares at Ren. “That’s Mikhael or sir! To you Ren...” He says dangerously as he shoots a glare, then turns to Alice with a narrowed gaze. “Is this true? Does he tell the truth?” He asked. Alice looked at Ren who pleaded with her with a silent communication to go along with it. She sighed and looked back at the Male. “No, Mikhael.” she replied. “Alice of course I am, y-...” Ren starts but is cut off when Alice shakes her head. “Thanks but there’s no need to lie on my account.” She gave a quick smile to Ren before turning back to Mikhael. Her smile dropped as she looked at Mikhael with an empty look. “I got jumped and It turned into a fight, Ren wants to pay them back.” She said with a blank empty expression. Mikhael’s blue eyes darken as his eyes narrowed more at Alice and he steps into the room. “What have I always told you?” Alice shifts on the spot where she was, she felt uncomfortable and she hated being in his presence. He felt, dark, scary and wrong. He was always looking at her with murderous rage and she hated him with a passion. Josh wasn’t the only one who made her life hard and miserable. He did too. “To…to not get into unnecessary fights.” She answers lowering her gaze. she hated this. She hated feeling so small and pathetic in his presence. “Because?” he pressed. She sighed, slumping her shoulders. “Because….if I lose it will look bad on the family.” Alice says softly in almost a whisper as her hands balled into fists. Inside she was shaking with a mixture of fear and rage. Afraid what may happen next and rage for her allowing herself to be this weak. Mikhael straightens his waist coat before folding his hands in front of him and he looks over at her again. “Did you win?” He questions, his thoughts calculating and depending on her answer...she didn’t want to find out. “Kind of?” She hesitantly replies. His manner changes, he gets dangerously close to Alice and Ren pushes himself off the counter. Alice shoots him a look which stops him in his tracks and Ren looks at the side of Mikhael’s head with pure hatred. It was no secret that the teenagers hated him, their boss and head of the family. Alice hated that he was her father by paper and law. He was by no means fatherly. He seemed to detest her and the feelings were mutual on her side as well. Ignoring their silent communication he continued. “Kind of?” his voice was dark and his patience was wearing thin with her. “Cyka, did you or did you not?” “Yes.” she answered quickly wanting to get this over with. “And you got beat up in the process, which in theory makes you weak. I do not tolerate weak members.” He snaps back at her. Alice was shaking uncontrollably on the inside now, she clenched her fists so hard they too started to shake. “I know.” She answers. Her voice empty of emotion and her eyes blank, glazing over. She was residing inside herself again. A safety net she always did when she was upset and unable to handle her own emotions. Ren watches her closely, reading her expression’s judging her mood and coming up with nothing. Mikhael continued to ignore Ren, his hard gaze remained on Alice his adopted child. Ren having stayed quiet could no longer stand this tension in the room. A room of healing and medicine no doubt. “Mikey, it wasn’t a fair fight. It was three against one-…..” He was interrupted when the sound of a hand striking against his face filled the air. “You will learn respect and to hold your tongue!!’ He yelled angrily at the teen. Glaring hard at Ren, he turned shifting his entire body towards him. “She disobeyed, she must learn to follow orders, my orders and if she wants to live under this roof, she will learn not to disrespect ME.” He emphasises the last word. He turns towards a wide eyed Alice, she was staring at Ren in shock. Her entire body went cold when Mikhael back-handed him across the face. Her anger and hatred was boiling over. She couldn’t believe that he had hit Ren, she wanted to hit him. Punch him. Kill him. Ren rubs the now red mark on his left cheek, he goes to say something but is cut off by Mikhael raising a hand. “I do not care what pathetic excuse you have. She will be punished and as punishment, she will be making a delivery.” He reaches into his pocket of his blazer jacket, pulling out a smallish parcel. It was no bigger then his palm, wrapped in brown wrapping paper. “You will take it to this address written here and you will do it by tomorrow evening.” He instructed as he reaches into his pocket again he pulls out a folded piece of paper with the address written on it. He hands both items to Alice and she looks at them, turning the parcel around in her hand as she examines it. “What is it?” She ask’s innocently as she pocketed the items. Was this some sort of loyalty test of his? It sometimes shocks Ren when she asks questions like these, he forgets sometimes she is still young, a child. “You don’t need to know.’ His snap reply answers her question. Despite her age and innocence, she knew better then to ask further questions. Ren stepped to her side now, the need to be by her side over whelming him and the need to protect her. He wasn’t happy with this at all, he did not like the idea of Alice being in potential danger. “Mikhael, sir let me do it. Alice has barely turned sixteen and-..” Ren spoke up in desperation. He was going to protect her at all costs. “You will receive your own punishment, don’t think I have forgotten your disrespect.” He snapped at Ren. “This is her punishment for her own stupidity.” Those words cut through Alice like a knife. Was she stupid for sticking up for herself? She felt an incredible amount of guilt that Ren was being punished for trying to protect her. Her own foolishness has got Ren hurt. Without anything more being said, Mikhael straightens his blazer jacket and leaves the room. A few moments had passed and nothing was said between the two teens. Alice looks over at Ren, who looked like he was deep in thought and his expression was unreadable. She watched him for a few moments before nudging him with her elbow. He snaps out of his thoughts as his brown eyes met her silver orbs. He gave her a soft smile as it turns into a grin. “Alice, why not let me do it? You don’t have to tell tall dark and scary.” Ren suggested, his voice full of concern and slightly hopeful that she would agree. Alice shakes her head slightly. “No I can do this, besides he will find out.” “Yeah….you’re right Ali.” He sighed not liking this one bit. He runs a hand through his hair, brushing it back before it springs back to its place. Silently he went over to the storage, where the medical supplies were kept and pulled out some bandages. “whats that for?” She asked completely forgetting that her ribs needed tending too. “You’re going need to need your ribs supported.” Ren chuckles at her. She groans giving him a face, she hated the fuss but she knew Ren was right. Ren ignored her groans and the silent daggers she was giving him. He patched her up, getting Alice to lift up her clothing again and tapping the bandages around her torso, to prevent further damage at least. “Ali, you know you should really go to the hospital.” Ren comments finishing up with concern in his voice. Despite the pain, Alice gave him a reassuring smile. “I’m fine, i’m a lot stronger then people think.” she says slowly heaving herself up and doubles over slightly holding her side. Ren shoots to her side quickly to help her stand and Alice held out her hand to stop him. “I’m good.” She groaned softly, breathing steady breaths through the pain. “And i’m a monkey’s uncle Ali.” sarcastically Ren says with a chuckle. Alice shoots a glare and Ren smiles softly patting her head. “Just rest Ali, he did say you have until tomorrow to do it.” He suggested. Alice sighed caving. “Alright, alright. I will rest for today but I will deliver it tomorrow.” “Knew you would see it my way.” Ren grin grew. Alice rolled her eyes as she shoved him weakly. “Yeah, yeah.” She giggles softly. Ren’s grin relaxed into a soft smile as he reached up a hand and gently ruffled her hair. Alice rolled her eyes, smiling a soft smile as she swatted at his hand. *** After resting for a day and some healing as done, Alice without a word, that evening left the mansion heading to downtown New york. She didn’t even say a word to Ren, she assumed Tony knew because of Mikhael, so she didn’t bother saying anything to him. She heads down the streets of the more well kept part of town till she enters downtown. She walks, head down, past run down shops, cars with windows smashed and tires stolen from them. Buildings looked like they could need some good tending too, windows boarded up and doors hanging off. It looked like a dump and she was somewhat glad she got to live in a much nicer neighbourhood. She still hated Mikhael, but she was grateful for sleeping in a decent bed at night and at least is in a….would she consider it safe? Everyone in the place carries a gun, Mikhael included. He was paranoid he was going to be murdered and always carried a weapon with him, he even has a gun under his pillow. She wasn’t legal yet, so she couldn’t have a gun till she was twenty one but then again what the law doesn’t know can’t hurt. Ren had gotten her a small hand pistol, which she reaches to her back pocket and checks its there, when she had turned fifteen. He had gotten her it in hopes she would use it only for protection, she she has done. Not once has she fired it, which was a good thing, she hated gun’s and Still does. She always felt on edge, even with the gun, when she was in this part of town. She looks over her shoulder every five minutes, quickening her pace and takes out the piece of paper from her pocket with the address on it. She takes a quick look at the address again and looks up, scanning the streets she finds what she needs. she speed walks taking a left all the while still looking behind her. She kept walking for a further five minutes before approaching the road, which matched the address and she finds herself at an abandoned building/warehouse. “This can’t be right..” she mutters to herself while scanning the address again. Sure enough it was the right one. The warehouse looked old and dark, the windows either smashed or boarded up. Most of it looked like it could fall down at any given moment. Alice spent two minutes trying to find a way inside the building, when she came across a back door. It appeared to be unlocked. ‘How convenient.’ Alice thought sarcastically, as she slipped inside the building. The inside was dark and the only light source which was the natural light coming in from outside was blocked from the boarded up windows. “Hello?” She calls out to the dark nothing , her own voice echos back at her. She ventured further into the building and the only sound that reached her ears was her own footsteps. Out of no where, a few minutes later a voice gruff spoke out in the darkness. “You got my package?” It asked and judging from it, Alice worked out it was male. It seemed to come from a rather large opened spaced room to her left. She enters the dimly lit room from the light bulb above her. She quickly gazes about the room, a feeling of creepy-ness fills her entire body and she wished she was back home with Ren. “Yeah, I do.” She replied, moments later taking the parcel from her pocket. A tall male with short, brown, dirty hair stepped out from the shadows. He dressed in a dirty tracksuit hoodie and matching tracksuit pants. His blue eyes seemed dull and lifeless to her, they seemed to remind her of someone else but she couldn’t quite think who. He kept rubbing his arm, as his eyes darted around the room. Her brain instantly clicked ‘Junkie.’ She takes another quick look at his profile as the male, not saying anything simply raised his hand to accept the parcel. She placed the parcel in his hand and without so much as a thank you, he just leaves without another word. “Okay then…” She mutters, frowning a little confused about the whole experience and left the location. The task didn’t take her no more then an hour and Alice was back at the mansion in no more then twenty minutes. Ren was waiting for her when she got back, he was sitting in the kitchen eating an apple when she walked in. “Ali!” He cried, jumping up from his chair as he, in one bound getting right in front of her, eloping her into a tight hug. “Ow, ow, ow, ow! The ribs!” She winced, through clenched teeth. He instantly releases her and gave an apologetic smile. ‘Sorry Ali.” He says as he rubs the back of his neck. “It’s fine Ren.” She gave a weak chuckle as she held her side. His smile softened as he reached out and ran a hand through her red hair. “I got worried Ali.” He speaks softly. “You didn’t need to be, i’m fine. I told you it would go ok.” She flashes a smile, reassuring him and She pulls away slightly as he sighs and ruffles her hair gently. She sees a flash of hurt cross his expression which he quickly hides. A stab of guilt ripples through her chest. She knew his feelings towards her weren’t not merely just friends, when they were fourteen not long after her first fight he confessed when he came home and they kissed. But what happened after, Alice felt guilty ever since. She ignored him for weeks and wouldn’t speak to him, it alone look at him. She felt awkward and she wanted to apologise or running off after but she just couldn’t bring herself too. She felt awful that she couldn’t share the same feelings, she just couldn’t see him more then a brother. She can still see that hurt on his face every time they see each other, him wishing they could be more but she always kept her distance and insists they will be nothing but best friends. He of course stopped a year ago and she still couldn’t exactly face him properly to this day. “I know but you’re my best friend, so of course I am gonna worry.” He chuckles as Alice swats at his hand. “I know, I know.” She sighs as he withdraws his hand placing both his hands in his pocket. Ren gives her a soft smile as he moves his hands from his pockets and folds them across his chest. “I’m glad you came back in one piece.” He says managing a small chuckle. “Yeah, it wasn’t all bad. Just delivered the parcel and left, no big deal.” She returns the smile towards her best friend. Tension leaving, she was relieved that they were back to normal and she begins to relax. Ren shakes his head chuckling at her. “I don’t doubt it but be careful yeah? Don’t piss Josh off, if he is causing you trouble come to me.” “What are you my Dad or something? Or my mom? your’e like a dotting parent or something.” She joked laughing. He playfully glares at her, before grinning from ear to ear. “Yes, well someone has to parent you one way or another. You never listen to Tony and hell would freeze over before you listen to Mikey.” He laughs joking along. “Oh lord forgive me when that day comes.” She cries in mock religious speak as she throws her hands in the air. Both teen’s then burst out laughing for about five minutes before calming down. “Okay, Okay I will be more carful maybe I should call you grandma instead.” She teases once more. Ren just shakes his head at her before nudging her playfully. “This granny is gonna whoop your ass in a moment if you’re not careful.” “Yeah, yeah grandma.” She weakly shoves him laughing. “Come on lets go to bed its late and already dark.” Ren chuckles once more and nods to the exit of the kitchen. She nods in agreement, even tho she wasn’t tired and she grabs an apple. Both teens leave the kitchen playfully shoving each other and laughing. The delivery long forgotten now.
