Adrian’s lingering anger toward Elena

1091 Words
The morning sunlight spilled across the study, painting the walls in soft gold. Adrian sat at his desk, jaw tight, eyes narrowed at the stack of papers before him. Legal documents, court summaries, and articles about Elena’s case covered the polished wood, but he barely noticed them. His mind was consumed by one thing: Elena. Elena, accused of attempted murder The thought sent a shiver through him. He couldn’t fathom why anyone would accuse her of something so cruel—but even now, he couldn’t fully let go of the anger. She had left him. She had humiliated him, sliding into another man’s car and smashing the apple pie he had baked with his own hands, leaving him to bleed silently inside. And he still remembered every second of it. Sean leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. “You’ve been sitting there for hours, staring at those papers. It’s not going to solve itself.” Adrian ran a hand through his hair, his expression stormy. “I don’t know where to start,” he admitted. “She left me, Sean. She humiliated me. And now… now she’s accused of something worse, and we have a little girl who needs me. I don’t even know if I want to help her because I hate that she hurt me, but I have to—for Sophia.” Sean’s eyes softened slightly. “Adrian, this isn’t about forgiving her. It’s about protecting your daughter. That’s all that matters right now.” Adrian exhaled sharply. “I know,” he muttered, almost to himself. “I promised Sophia. I can’t let her mother rot in prison. But don’t get me wrong—I still hate Elena for leaving me. I still… miss her, a little, but it’s buried under all this anger.” Sean nodded. “Then let’s focus on the problem. The best lawyers, the best investigators, every resource your company has. If anyone can get her out, it’s them.” Adrian’s mind went over the details again:Sophia carefully carrying the apple pie, Auntie Emma’s quiet vigilance. Elena had kept Sophia safe all this time, shielding her daughter from danger—and from Adrian’s wrath. He felt a twinge of guilt, but he shoved it aside. He wouldn’t let himself feel soft. Not yet. Later that afternoon, Adrian thought about Sophia. She had been quiet, careful, polite, just as Elena had trained her to be. She hadn’t volunteered information or offered help; she had observed, listened, and followed instructions. That made Adrian’s heart ache and swell simultaneously. The little girl was just like her mother—brave, intelligent, and loyal. But he refused to let himself think of Elena too much. Not yet. By late afternoon, Adrian and Sean convened in the study. Files, papers, and printed legal documents were spread across the desk. Adrian’s laptop displayed tabs of court filings, timelines, and investigative notes. “Here’s what we know,” Sean said, pointing at the files. “Elena is accused of attempting to murder the boy her uncle forced her to marry—the one she left the day she broke up with you. Evidence is flimsy, circumstantial at best, but the prosecution is presenting her as cold, vengeful, and dangerous.” Adrian slammed his fist on the desk, making the papers jump. “Impossible,” he muttered. “She wouldn’t… she couldn’t do that. She’s not that type of person. But even so, I hate her for leaving me. I still remember every moment she humiliated me. And yet… for Sophia, I have to help her. Damn it.” “I know,” Sean said quietly. “Which is why we need the best legal minds in the city. Witness statements, character references, timelines, alibis—anything to prove her innocence. And we need to understand her environment inside the prison.” Adrian clenched his jaw. “I don’t want to see her yet. Not face-to-face. If I do, I might lose control. I might… let some of the old feelings slip. I have to protect Sophia first, and myself second.” Sean nodded. “Then we do this carefully. Quiet visits, discreet investigation, and ensure Sophia doesn’t find out more than she should. Let her have normalcy—cake, school, playtime.” Adrian thought of the apple pie again. Sophia had handed it over to Auntie Emma with such care, keeping her mother’s secret intact. The memory tugged at something deep inside him, a soft corner he refused to name as longing. I hate her… but part of me misses her. And I hate that, too. That afternoon, Adrian’s thoughts wandered to the prison. He pictured Sophia walking toward Auntie Emma, holding the apple pie like a sacred object. He imagined stepping out of the car quietly, following her, his mind racing with questions. He remembered asking, “Sophia? What are you doing here? This is… a prison. Is your mother here? He forced himself not to think about it and keeps working on Elena's case The next afternoon.... Elena stepped out of the prison gates, the sunlight hitting her face like a rebirth. Adrian was waiting in his mansion. His gaze was steady, but tension burned beneath it. “Adrian… thank you,” she said softly as she sat immediately she saw him. “I’ll… I’ll repay you. Some other time.” He shook his head. “No. You can repay me now,” he said firmly, gesturing toward a set of documents. Elena’s eyes fell on them: Sophia’s full custody papers. She felt a lump in her throat. But For the first time, she imagined Sophia living happily, freely, and richly with Adrian. The girl deserved this life more than anything,Sophia had suffered with her in the prison and now she can live freely. She felt sad upon signing but she thinks it's best for Sophia,She can't stay with her,Her uncle and cousin will come after her and she doesn't want to put Sophia in trouble,She had nothing left now,Just herself and clothes. Without hesitation, she signed the papers. Her hand shook slightly, but the resolve in her heart was unshakable. Sophia’s future was more important than pride, pain, or anything else. She stood to leave. Adrian’s hand caught hers. “Just like that?” he said, voice sharp. “You signed it just like that. You gave her up… just like the way you gave up on me six years ago, isn’t it?” Elena froze. She had sacrificed everything for Sophia, yet Adrian misunderstood her actions entirely.
