Relief and fresh dread warred inside me.
I wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and sleep for the next three days. My pulse betrayed me immediately at the thought. Surely, this day couldn’t get any worse.

Night had swallowed the sky completely by the time Alpha Dimitri finally slowed the SUV. The headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating a modest roadside inn nestled just off the highway.
