Briefly, I wondered whether the woman had somehow mistaken Scarlett and me for an entirely different pair of travelers.
My jaw tightened faintly as irritation found a new home in my chest. Couple. The very word seemed ridiculous. Scarlett was my healer. The very suggestion that there was anything else between us was absurd.
The woman, unfortunately, appeared to mistake my silence for embarrassment.
“Don’t worry,” she said with a conspiratorial smile. “I’ve seen it all before. Enjoy your honeymoon phase while it lasts.”
I simply stared at her for several moments, wondering how this conversation had spiraled so catastrophically in such a short amount of time. Correcting her would only invite further questions, and I found myself increasingly unwilling to discuss Scar
