CHAPTER SIX:Adrian Cole

The house didn’t feel like a home. Elena noticed it the moment the gates closed behind her. Everything about the place was… precise. The driveway stretched out in a long, smooth line, bordered by perfectly trimmed hedges that looked like they had never grown out of place. The building itself stood tall and quiet, its glass exterior reflecting the dull gray of the afternoon sky. No noise. No movement. Just stillness. Controlled stillness. “Elena Hart?” She turned at the sound of her name. A man in a dark suit stood a few steps away, his posture straight, his expression neutral. “Yes.” “I’m Lucas Grant,” he said. “I’ll be overseeing your access while you’re here.” Overseeing. Not assisting. Not helping. Elena nodded once. “Okay.” “This way.” He didn’t wait for her response before turning and walking toward the entrance. Elena followed. Inside, the silence felt even heavier. The air was cool, almost cold, and everything—from the polished floors to the minimal furniture—looked untouched. Like no one actually lived there. “Is it always this quiet?” she asked before she could stop herself. Lucas didn’t look back. “Mr. Cole prefers it that way.” Of course he did. They moved through the hallway, their footsteps the only sound breaking the stillness. Elena’s eyes scanned everything automatically. No clutter. No personal items. No signs of life beyond what was necessary. It didn’t feel like a space someone lived in. It felt like a space someone existed in. They stopped in front of a door. Lucas turned to her. “You’ll be responsible for monitoring his condition, administering prescribed care, and reporting any changes,” he said. “All instructions are in the file you were given.” “I’ve reviewed them.” “Good.” He paused briefly, his gaze assessing her. “Mr. Cole values privacy,” he added. “You’ll respect that.” “I will.” Lucas nodded once. Then opened the door. — The room was dim. Not dark. But quiet in a way that made Elena instinctively lower her voice—even though she hadn’t spoken yet. The curtains were partially drawn, allowing just enough light to filter through. And there— By the window— He stood. Adrian Cole. Elena recognized him immediately. Not because she had met him before. But because there was something about him that made recognition unnecessary. He didn’t turn when they entered. Didn’t acknowledge her presence. Just stood there, one hand resting lightly against the edge of the window frame, his posture straight, his focus somewhere beyond the glass. For a moment, Elena said nothing. She simply observed. Tall. Composed. Still. Everything about him felt controlled. Like every movement, every breath, every reaction had been carefully measured and adjusted over time. “Mr. Cole,” Lucas said calmly. “Your caregiver has arrived.” No response. Elena’s gaze shifted slightly, studying him more closely now. There was something off. Subtle. But there. A slight tension in his shoulders. The way his hand pressed just a little too firmly against the frame. The almost imperceptible pause between his breaths. He finally moved. Slowly, deliberately, he turned. His eyes met hers. And just like that— The room felt smaller. Elena held his gaze, refusing to look away. Not out of defiance. But because something about him demanded steadiness. His expression didn’t change. Didn’t soften. Didn’t react. He simply looked at her. Assessing. Measuring. Like she was something to be evaluated, not acknowledged. “This is Miss Hart,” Lucas continued. “She’ll be handling your care moving forward.” Silence. Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on Elena. Then, after a moment that stretched just slightly too long— He looked away. Just like that. Dismissed. Elena blinked once, her fingers tightening slightly at her sides. That was it? No greeting. No acknowledgment. Nothing. “Is there anything you require at the moment, sir?” Lucas asked. Adrian shook his head once. Minimal. Controlled. Lucas nodded. “Very well.” He turned to Elena. “You can begin your assessment.” Then he left. The door closed behind him with a soft click. And suddenly— It was just the two of them. Elena exhaled slowly, grounding herself. Professional. Stay professional. She stepped forward. “My name is Elena,” she said, her voice calm, even. “I’ll be monitoring your condition and assisting with your care.” No response. Adrian had moved back toward the window, his attention already elsewhere. Elena watched him for a moment. Then, quietly— “I’ll need to take your vitals.” Still nothing. Her jaw tightened slightly. This wasn’t unusual. Some patients were resistant. Some were distant. Some didn’t want help, even when they needed it. But something about this felt different. Less like resistance. More like… indifference. She stepped closer. Close enough now to notice more. The faint pallor beneath his skin. The slight strain in his posture. The way his breathing wasn’t quite as steady as it should have been. “Mr. Cole,” she said again, firmer this time. “I need to check your vitals.” For a moment, she thought he might ignore her again. But then— He turned. Slowly. His gaze met hers once more. And this time, there was something in it. Not warmth. Not interest. Something sharper. Something tired. “You’re persistent,” he said. His voice was low. Controlled. But there was an edge beneath it. Elena didn’t react. “It’s part of the job,” she replied. Silence. Then— “Do it quickly.” Permission. Barely. But enough. Elena stepped closer, setting her things down with steady hands. Her focus shifted immediately. From him— To the patient. She reached for his wrist, her fingers brushing lightly against his skin. His pulse was there. But not right. Too fast. Too irregular. Her brows pulled together slightly. “Have you been experiencing discomfort?” she asked. “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too easily. Elena glanced up at him briefly. Then back to her task. She continued the assessment. Blood pressure. Respiratory rate. Observation. Each detail adding to the same conclusion forming in her mind. Something wasn’t right. Not just “unwell.” Not just “recovering.” Worse. Hidden. Managed. But not stable. Her movements slowed slightly. More careful now. More deliberate. Because she had seen this before. The control. The silence. The way patients pretended everything was fine when it wasn’t. Her chest tightened faintly. She finished, stepping back slightly. For a moment, she said nothing. Just watched him. And this time— She saw it clearly. The strain. The effort it took for him to stand there like nothing was wrong. The quiet war happening beneath the surface. Elena inhaled slowly. Professional. Stay professional. But her voice, when she spoke, was quieter now. “You’re not as stable as your records suggest,” she said. Adrian’s gaze sharpened. For a brief second— Something flickered across his face. Then it was gone. “Stick to your role,” he said coldly. Elena didn’t respond. Because she already knew— This wasn’t going to be simple. And as she stood there, watching him pretend he wasn’t struggling— One thought settled firmly in her mind. Something is wrong. And whatever it was… It was far more serious than anyone was saying.
