Chapter 2
Emery’s POV
"I reject you, Kade Wilson." Those were not the words I had ever thought I would say.
My dream was to have a mate, one I could cherish and love in the rough times, one who would live with me no matter what happened.
In the eighteen years spent in the Blood Moon pack, my dream had not been their acceptance or love; I had been with them long enough to know those were hopeless dreams, but a mate who would live me unconditionally.
I had dreamed of the perfect life that would be once I found my mate, but reality was a much harder teacher. I would come to learn that a little too late, and when I did, my wolf would die with the lesson.
*******
"Orphan freak," someone cursed, and someone else pushed her away.
"Don't let the orphan contaminate us."
I wanted to tell them that you were only an orphan if your parents died, but there really was no use. Girls like that were always looking for ways to hurt other people, and I would always be their target.
I walked past them, my hair packed in a small knot; it flowed down my back, shining in the moonlight. Over the years, I had grown into my looks; I now had a nice shape; my breasts were fuller, so we're my hips; and my eyes were as blue as always, shining like little crystals in the dark.
"f*****g abomination," someone spat as I walked by. That one hurt the most of all. I was an orphan, and yes, I was an omega, but ever since the day I changed to my wolf three years ago at the age of fifteen, which was almost a year later than most everyone, and then I had changed to a white, pristine wolf, no one had let me forget that I was a freak of nature, not the girls, not the adults, and definitely not Isabelle, a girl who had been my friend until that fateful day. Ever since that day when I changed, things have never been the same.
I was left out and abandoned; I had no friends or family, and the only people I thought could care for me didn't seem to care all that much. There was only Alpha Rozan; he was always nice, buying me gifts and wishing me a happy birthday, like he had today with a large birthday cake and flowers, like lilies. I was at an age where I didn't have to worry any longer; soon I would have everything I had ever dreamed about.
Today I was happy, not just because I was going to be eighteen, but because today I would find my mate, a man who would live and cherish me, a man who would be mine just like I was his. It was a giddy feeling, and I didn't know what to do about it, so I skipped and tried not to let my mind run away from me.
It was late evening; the mating ball would last until midnight. I walked into the building with a small smile. My wolf, Kyra, surged forward, trying to locate our mate. She shivered with excitement within me, and I was too excited myself to tell her to slow down.
She stiffened. He's here.
She growled, and I struggled not to laugh. She was pouting. I knew her to be dramatic, but this was too much fun.
I joined her in the search, the smell assaulting my nose: perfume, smoke, alcohol, and then there was an illusive scent that danced beneath my nose and slipped away every time I was certain I found it. I followed it into the hall to the edge. This was it. Today was the day I met the man of my dreams—the day where he would be mine forever and always. I saw him immediately, my wolf crying out in victory. He was hidden behind someone else. Our eyes locked, and all my body shivered like I'd been hit by a truck.
Alpha Kade, the most good-looking and kind alpha in the Blood Moon pack, wanted every girl to be his chosen mate; he was tall and handsome; his nose was broken from when he was a teen; and his healing had not yet set in.
He would soon be the reigning alpha once his father passed.
He had brown hair that was cut short to his scalp and eyes like Isabelle's fur, like cocoa, and somehow he was mine. My heart started beating miles an hour, like I was about to faint. I wasn't sure what to do, but my body knew because my feet gravitated to him without conscious will. He looked at me silently, and I willed him to say something, anything, but I guess I should have been careful what I wished for. His mouth opened, and he said the cruelest words.
"I reject you," he muttered. The crowd stoked, turning to look at him. My cheeks flushed crimson red.
"Why?" I asked, and he laughed.
"You are a weak omega, a freak at that; I'm not mating that," he huffed, and I shrunk in on myself. The room erupted into laughter, the whole room of people who should be my family all laughing at me.
He joined them in laughing, his head tossed back.
"I reject you, Emery White, as my mate," he said, and my throat closed in agony. It was now official; there was no coming back from the fact that he had rejected me.
I sniffled as tears stung in my eyes. I struggled not to let myself cry, but it was too hard. Even within me, my wolf cried, rolling in on itself.
Rejection of a mate was a horrible thing for a werewolf, even more so for an omega. To have been rejected so publicly in full view of everyone who wanted to know was not just humiliating but heartbreaking, and for flaws that I could not correct.
He pulled away from me and turned.
"Sweet heart," he whispered, and I paused. As my eyes caught on to what had been so obvious, Kade walked to a hidden perch and leaned in to kiss a girl. The whole room cheered them on. The girl pulled away laughing, and I froze. It was Isabelle. She stood there, sending him an adoring smile.
I walked closer, stunned.
"How could you?" I asked, and she turned to look at me. She laughed, kissing Kade's cheek.
"I am better than you," she offered, linking her hand with his.
Kade turned to the hall and called out
"This is your future, Luna," he roared, and the crowd yelled back in return. My eyes blurred with tears. He turned to me and smirked.
I stiffened, looking at him, my fingers curling in on themselves. My mate and my best friend had just betrayed me, and I had let it happen.
I would not let it happen again.
I would never let anyone hurt me like that again, and even though I couldn't do much, I could hurt him too.
I looked at him and opened my mouth.
"I reject you, Kade Wilson," I muttered. My ey
es rolled to the back of my head, and my body met the cold, unforgiving floor.
