Chapter 27

Chapter 27: Tangled Heart Shanaya sat curled up on the window bench of their lavish estate, her knees hugged to her chest. Outside, the clouds drifted lazily over the Tuscan hills. But her mind was far from the scenic view. Her fingers absentmindedly traced circles on the windowpane as her thoughts swirled into a storm. I came to Italy for my postgrad… not this. Her eyes closed tightly. She had once dreamed of quiet campus mornings, café-hopping with friends, submitting thesis papers, visiting museums. But now… she was here. In this mansion. A Moretti. Married to a man she barely knew when all she wanted was peace. I was supposed to marry Christian. That itself was terrifying. A man who forced me into a corner. Who saw me as a pawn. She exhaled shakily. And now… I’m married to his brother. Lorenzo. The same man who stayed by her hospital bed, who kissed her under the rain, who made her heart stumble in ways she didn’t want to admit. He wasn’t like Christian. But he was still a mafia heir. How do I allow myself to love someone who walks in blood? she wondered bitterly. How do I let my heart belong to a man who’s lived a life built on fear and power? And worse—what would happen if Christian returned? Would he hurt Lorenzo? Would he hurt her? They were brothers. Blood. The idea of facing Christian again made her stomach turn, but the thought of Lorenzo standing in front of her, shielding her again, broke something deep within. Shanaya pulled a thin blanket around her shoulders tighter. Her lips trembled slightly. None of this was my plan. I didn’t choose this marriage. I didn’t choose this world. But now I’m here. Lorenzo… he was trying. Not forcing. Not demanding. Just… trying. And that confused her even more. Can I ever love him? she whispered to herself. She thought of his eyes the night he told her, “Please don’t leave me, love.” Of his warmth, his quiet affection, the way he made her feel safe, even when the world didn’t. She swallowed the lump in her throat. Being an orphan since seventeen, I thought I’d never belong anywhere again. But with him… sometimes, I feel seen. Wanted. But is that enough to heal all this confusion? Tears clung to her lashes, not from pain, but from the terrifying unknown that lay ahead. Could she accept love from a man who was never meant to be her husband? And could she open her heart to Lorenzo Moretti?
